What is a Consignment Number?
Understanding the 13-character India Post tracking number
Every article booked at an India Post office receives a unique 13-character consignment number (also called a tracking number or article number). This number is printed on your postal receipt and allows you to track your parcel at every stage of its journey.

Breaking Down the Format
The first letter indicates the type of postal article. For example, E stands for Speed Post (individual), R for Registered Letter, C for Registered Parcel, and A for Speed Post bulk articles.
The second letter identifies the state or region where the article was booked. For example, K = Karnataka, D = Delhi, M = Maharashtra, T = Tamil Nadu.
The 9-digit middle section is the unique serial number assigned to your article. No two articles in the same series will have the same 9-digit number, making your consignment globally unique.
The last two letters are the ISO country code. For all India Post domestic and international articles originating in India, this is always IN — the country code for India.
This format follows the Universal Postal Union (UPU) S10 standard, which is used by postal services around the world. This is why India Post consignment numbers can also be tracked on international carrier websites when the parcel crosses borders.
Types of India Post Articles & Their Prefixes
The first letter of your consignment number tells you exactly what type of article it is
Standard Speed Post articles booked by individual senders at any post office counter. The most common prefix for domestic speed post tracking.

Speed Post articles booked in bulk by banks, NSDL, government departments. Your PAN card, Aadhaar, or bank debit card is typically an "A" series article.

India Post, officially the Department of Posts under the Ministry of Communications of the Government of India, has one of the richest histories of any postal service in the world. Its modern origins trace back to 1854, when Lord Dalhousie reorganised the postal system under the British East India Company, laying the foundation for a unified national postal network.
After independence in 1947, India Post continued to expand rapidly. Today it operates through a network of over 1,65,000 post offices across the country — making it not just the largest postal network in India, but the largest postal network in the world by number of post offices.

Of its 1,65,000+ post offices, approximately 90% are located in rural India, making it a lifeline for millions of citizens in remote areas who have limited access to private courier services. With over 500,000 postal employees and a fleet of vehicles, bicycles, boats, and even mountaineering teams for the most remote locations, India Post serves every corner of the country.

1 Letter Mail
The standard letter service allows you to send written correspondence, documents, and lightweight items throughout India and internationally. A standard letter can weigh up to 2 kg. Letters are sorted and delivered through the regular postal network. For important documents requiring proof of delivery, it is advisable to use Registered Post instead of ordinary letter mail.
2 Book Packet
The Book Packet service is designed for sending books, pamphlets, periodicals, and printed materials at a concessional rate. A book packet can weigh up to 5 kg. The packet must contain only books or printed material and must be wrapped in a manner that allows postal authorities to verify its contents. This service offers an economical way for publishers, educational institutions, and libraries to distribute printed material.
3 Parcel
Parcels are used to send physical goods, merchandise, and packages. India Post offers two categories of parcel service. Unregistered parcels can weigh up to 4 kg and are sent without a tracking number. Registered parcels can weigh up to 10 kg for domestic delivery (and up to 20 kg for certain categories), come with a consignment number, and are fully tracked at every transit point. For valuable items, it is strongly recommended to use Registered Parcel.
4 Registered Newspaper
India Post provides a concessional mailing service for newspapers and periodicals that are registered with the Registrar of Newspapers for India (RNI). Only publications that have obtained a valid RNI registration are eligible for this service. This allows publishers to deliver newspapers and magazines to subscribers across the country at highly subsidised postage rates, enabling affordable mass distribution of the press.
5 Inland Letter Card
The Inland Letter Card is a single-sheet pre-stamped stationery item available at post offices. It is designed exclusively for domestic (within India) correspondence only and cannot be used for international mail. The inland letter card can carry a message of up to 5 grams. It is one of the most affordable ways to send written communication within India and is particularly popular in rural areas.
6 Post Card
The Post Card is a small, pre-printed card used to send short messages. The standard dimensions of an India Post post card are 14 cm × 9 cm. India Post offers both ordinary post cards and picture post cards. Post cards are one of the cheapest forms of communication available through the postal system and have been in use in India since the late 19th century. They are delivered through the regular postal network without tracking.
7 Blind Literature Packet
As a special service to support visually impaired individuals, India Post allows the sending of literature for the blind — including Braille books, embossed writing, and audio recordings — completely free of charge. A blind literature packet can weigh up to 7 kg and is sent at no postage cost. The packet must be sent by or addressed to a recognised institution for the blind, or by a visually impaired person. This is one of India Post's most valued social welfare services.
8 Registration
Registration is an additional service that can be applied to letters and parcels to provide enhanced security and accountability. When you register an article, India Post maintains a record of the article at every stage of its journey — from booking to delivery. The recipient is required to provide a signature upon delivery, creating a legal proof of delivery. A registered article receives a unique consignment number (typically starting with RR or RP) and can be tracked online throughout its transit.
9 Insurance
India Post offers an insurance service for articles containing valuable items. You can insure a postal article for its declared value at the time of booking. In case of loss or damage, India Post will compensate you up to the insured amount. Insurance is available for amounts up to ₹1,00,000 (one lakh rupees) at designated post offices. To avail insurance, the article must also be sent as a registered article. The insurance fee is calculated based on the declared value of the contents.
10 Value Payable Post (VPP)
Value Payable Post (VPP) is India Post's cash-on-delivery service. It allows the sender to dispatch an article to a recipient and collect the payment (value) through the post office on delivery. The post office collects the declared amount from the recipient and remits it back to the sender. The maximum remittance under VPP is ₹5,000 per article. VPP is commonly used by small businesses, artisans, and individuals selling goods to buyers in other cities, making it a precursor to modern e-commerce COD services.
