ATM/Debit Card Speed Post Tracking — SBI, HDFC, ICICI & Other Banks

Your bank dispatched a new debit card via Speed Post. Here is how to find the tracking number, check where your card is right now, and what to do if delivery fails — with step-by-step instructions for SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Axis, PNB, and Kotak.

Banks in India send new and replacement ATM/debit cards by Speed Post or private courier. If your bank used Speed Post, you can track the card just like any other Speed Post consignment — enter the 13-character tracking number on SpeedIndiaPost.com and see real-time delivery updates.

The tricky part? Finding that tracking number. Some banks send it via SMS immediately. Others bury it inside net banking or the mobile app. And a few never send it at all — you have to go looking for it yourself.

This guide covers where to find the tracking number for each major bank, how to track it step by step, how long delivery normally takes, and — most importantly — what to do if the card doesn't show up or gets returned.

Which Banks Send Debit Cards by Speed Post?

Not every bank uses Speed Post. Some use private courier partners like Blue Dart, DTDC, or Delhivery. The tracking method depends on which carrier your bank chose. Here is a quick reference:

Bank Usual Delivery Method Trackable on India Post?
SBI Speed Post Yes
Bank of Baroda Speed Post Yes
PNB Speed Post / Courier (varies) If Speed Post, yes
Canara Bank Speed Post Yes
HDFC Bank Private courier (usually Blue Dart) No — track on courier site
ICICI Bank Private courier / Speed Post (varies) If Speed Post, yes
Axis Bank Private courier No — track on courier site
Kotak Mahindra Private courier No — track on courier site

How to tell which carrier your bank used: Check the dispatch SMS. If the tracking number is 13 characters long and ends in "IN" (like EU123456789IN), it is Speed Post. If it is a different format or mentions Blue Dart, DTDC, or Delhivery, your bank used a private courier and you will need to track on that courier's website instead.

Where to Find Your Speed Post Tracking Number — Bank by Bank

The tracking number is the key to everything. Without it, you cannot check delivery status. Here is exactly where to find it for each major bank:

SBI (State Bank of India)

SBI sends debit cards exclusively via Speed Post. After dispatch, you should receive an SMS with the consignment number. If you did not get the SMS, here are two ways to find it:

YONO / YONO Lite App

  1. Open the app and tap Manage Cards
  2. Select Physical Debit Cards
  3. Tap Debit Card Issuance Tracking
  4. Enter your account number and the month you applied
  5. The consignment number appears if the card has been dispatched

Net Banking (onlinesbi.sbi)

  1. Log in and go to e-Services → ATM Card Services
  2. Click Request/Track Debit Card
  3. Select your account and the month of application
  4. The dispatch status and Speed Post number will be shown

Customer care: 1800 1234 / 1800 2100 (toll-free)

HDFC Bank

HDFC Bank typically sends debit cards via private courier (often Blue Dart), not Speed Post. Check your dispatch SMS — if the tracking number ends in "IN" and is 13 characters, it is Speed Post. Otherwise, track it on the courier's website.

HDFC Net Banking / App

  1. Log in to net banking or the HDFC mobile app
  2. Go to Cards → Track Debit Card Delivery
  3. The courier name and tracking number are shown under delivery status

Customer care: 1800 1600 / 1800 2600 (toll-free)

ICICI Bank

ICICI Bank uses a mix of private couriers and Speed Post depending on the location. You will get an SMS with the tracking number when the card is dispatched.

iMobile / Net Banking

  1. Log in to iMobile or internet banking
  2. Go to Services → Check Status → Track Deliverables
  3. Select ATM/Debit Card to see the courier name and tracking number

Customer care: 1800 1080 (toll-free, 24/7)

Axis Bank

Axis Bank usually sends cards via private courier. You can track the delivery through:

  1. Go to the Axis Bank website → Application Tracker → Cards → Deliverable Tracker
  2. Or use the AHA chatbot on the website or app — it provides delivery status 24/7

Customer care: 1800 4030 / 1800 8911 (toll-free)

PNB (Punjab National Bank)

PNB sends cards via Speed Post in most cases. The tracking number is sent via SMS after dispatch. You can also check via:

  1. Log in to PNB net banking
  2. Look for the Track ATM Card option on the dashboard

Customer care: 1800 1800 / 1800 2021 (toll-free)

Kotak Mahindra Bank

Kotak sends cards via private courier. When dispatched, you will receive an SMS with a tracking link. Click the link to check delivery status on the courier's website.

Customer care: 1800 4100

How to Track Your ATM Card on India Post — Step by Step

Once you have the 13-character Speed Post tracking number (like EU123456789IN), tracking your card takes less than a minute.

1

Open SpeedIndiaPost.com

Go to SpeedIndiaPost.com on your phone or computer. No login or signup needed.

2

Enter your consignment number

Type or paste the 13-character tracking number from your bank's SMS. Double-check the letters — "E" and "F" are easy to mix up, and "0" (zero) and "O" look similar.

3

Read the tracking events

You will see every scan event — from when the bank handed the card to India Post, through transit hubs, to "Out for Delivery" or "Delivered" at your local post office. The most recent event is at the top.

"Consignment Details Not Found"? This usually means the bank has generated the tracking number but India Post has not yet scanned the article into their system. Wait 24–48 hours and try again. If it still shows after 3 days, call your bank to confirm the card was actually handed over to the post office. Read our detailed troubleshooting guide for more.

How Long Does ATM Card Delivery Take?

There are two stages: the time your bank takes to process and dispatch the card, and the time Speed Post takes to deliver it. People often confuse the two.

Stage Typical Time
Bank processing & dispatch 3–7 working days after card request
Speed Post — same city 1–2 days after dispatch
Speed Post — same state / metro to metro 2–4 days after dispatch
Speed Post — different state / long distance 4–7 days after dispatch
Speed Post — remote / rural area 7–12 days after dispatch

So from the day you apply for a new card at SBI, for example, you can expect the card within 7–15 working days total in most cases. If your address is in a metro city, it is usually closer to 7 days. In rural or remote areas, it can stretch to 15 or more. For a detailed breakdown of Speed Post delivery norms, see our Speed Post delivery time guide.

What Each Tracking Status Means for Your Card

The tracking events for a bank card are exactly the same as any Speed Post article. Here are the key statuses and what they mean for you:

Item Booked / Booked

The bank has handed your card envelope to India Post and it has been accepted into the Speed Post system. Your card is at the origin post office.

In Transit / Dispatched to [City]

Your card is moving through India Post's sorting and transport network. It will pass through one or more sorting hubs before reaching your delivery post office.

Out for Delivery

The postman has your card and is on the delivery route. Stay available and keep your phone on — the postman may call before arriving. If you miss this, the card goes back to the post office.

Delivered

Your card has been delivered and someone signed for it. If you did not receive it yourself, check with family members or building security. If no one in your household received it, contact your bank immediately to block the card.

Returned to Sender

Delivery failed (wrong address, door locked, no one available) and the card is being sent back to the bank. Contact your bank's customer care — you will need to request a fresh card and confirm your address is correct in their records.

Delivery Attempted? How to Collect Your ATM Card from the Post Office

If the postman tried to deliver and you were not home, the card goes back to your local delivery post office. You need to collect it yourself. Here is the important part that most guides skip: your ATM card is a sensitive financial item. Leaving it sitting at a post office longer than necessary is not ideal.

Act fast. India Post holds undelivered Speed Post articles for about 7 days. After that, the card is returned to your bank. Don't wait for a second delivery attempt — go collect it yourself.

To collect your ATM card from the post office, bring:

Government photo ID (Aadhaar, PAN card, driving licence)
Speed Post tracking number
Intimation slip (if the postman left one)

Go to the delivery post office shown in your tracking history. Ask at the Speed Post counter for your consignment. They will verify your ID, have you sign for the article, and hand it over.

Security tip: When you collect the envelope, check that it is sealed and has not been tampered with. The card inside is inactive until you generate a PIN, so even if someone opened the envelope, they cannot use the card without your registered mobile number and OTP. Still, if the envelope looks opened, inform your bank before activating the card.

Activating Your Card After Receiving It

Your new debit card will not work until you generate a PIN. The card itself arrives inactive — you need to set it up before your first ATM withdrawal or POS transaction.

SBI

Generate your PIN via SMS: send PIN <last 4 digits of card> <last 4 digits of account number> to 567676 from your registered mobile. You can also set the PIN through the YONO app, net banking, or at any SBI ATM using the "PIN Generation" option.

HDFC Bank

Use the HDFC mobile app or net banking to generate a PIN online. Alternatively, visit any HDFC ATM and select the PIN generation option. You will need your registered mobile for OTP verification.

ICICI Bank

Generate a PIN via the iMobile app, internet banking, or at any ICICI ATM. The app method is quickest — go to Cards → Generate PIN and follow the steps.

Other Banks

Most banks offer PIN generation through their mobile app, net banking, or at the bank's own ATMs. Check the welcome letter that comes inside the card envelope — it usually has activation instructions printed on it.

Do not delay activation. Some banks set an expiry window on the initial PIN generation — if you wait too long, you may need to call customer care to reset the activation. Activate the card the same day you receive it.

What If Your Card Is Lost in Transit or Never Arrives?

If the tracking has not updated for more than 7 days, or shows confusing events like repeated dispatches with no delivery, your card may be genuinely stuck or lost. Here is what to do:

1

Call your bank and block the card immediately

Even though the card is not activated and cannot be used without a PIN, it is good practice to block it. This prevents any risk if the card falls into the wrong hands. Call the toll-free number for your bank (listed above) and request a block on the dispatched card number.

2

Request a re-issue

Ask the bank to issue a replacement card. For SBI, visit your home branch with your passbook and a government ID. For private banks, you can usually request a replacement through the app, net banking, or by calling customer care. Most banks do not charge for the first replacement if the original was lost in transit.

3

Confirm your address with the bank

Before the new card is dispatched, make sure the address in the bank's records is correct and complete — including flat number, building name, landmark, and PIN code. An incorrect address is the most common reason for failed delivery and returned cards.

4

If tracking shows "Returned to Sender"

The card is on its way back to your bank's processing centre or home branch. For SBI, you can visit your home branch with your passbook and ID to collect it directly. For other banks, call customer care — they will let you know whether the returned card can be re-dispatched or if a new one needs to be issued.

Track by SMS — No Internet Needed

If you do not have internet access, you can track your card by SMS. Send a message in this format from any mobile phone:

POST TRACK <tracking number>

Send to 166 or 51969

Example: POST TRACK EU123456789IN

You will receive a reply SMS with the current status of your consignment. Standard SMS charges apply.
