Driving Licence Speed Post Tracking — How to Track Your DL Delivery from Sarathi Parivahan

Your DL is approved, but the smart card still hasn't come. Here's where to find the Speed Post number, how to track it, how long it usually takes, and what to do if it's stuck at the RTO or the post office.

Already have your DL tracking number?

Paste the 13-character Speed Post number (it ends in "IN") to see every scan, from the booking post office to your door.

Track Now →

Here's the short answer. Your driving licence tracking number is a Speed Post consignment number, and you find it on the Sarathi Parivahan portal (sarathi.parivahan.gov.in): select your state, open Apply Online → Application Status, and enter your application number and date of birth. Once the RTO has posted your card, the status page shows the dispatch details, including the Speed Post number. Copy it and track it on our free Speed Post tracker or on India Post's website.

If your application says "approved" but there's no Speed Post number yet, the card simply hasn't been posted. Nothing is lost. The Ministry of Road Transport's own FAQ says that if your licence is approved but not delivered, you should contact your RTO and ask for the DL dispatch tracking number.

Waiting for the card feels long, especially when you need to drive. The good news: you don't have to wait for the plastic card to drive legally. More on that below.

Step by Step: Find Your DL Speed Post Number on Sarathi

Keep two things ready: your application number (it's on the acknowledgement slip and fee receipt, and in the SMS you got when you applied) and your date of birth exactly as you entered it on the form.

1

Open Sarathi and pick your state

Type sarathi.parivahan.gov.in into your browser yourself. Don't click on ads or lookalike sites. Sarathi itself warns people to use only the Ministry's official website and apps. Choose the state where you applied (the state of your RTO, not where you live now if you've moved).

Sarathi says it's best viewed on an up-to-date desktop browser at a screen resolution of 1366 × 768 or higher. If a page won't load on your phone, try a laptop.

2

Go to Apply Online → Application Status

In the menu bar, open Apply Online and select Application Status. That's the path given in Parivahan's official FAQ. Enter your application number, date of birth and the captcha, then submit.

Lost the application number? Use Others → Find Application Number on the same portal.

3

Scroll to the completed stages and find the dispatch row

The status page shows your details first, then a list of the stages your application has finished: submission, fee payment, test, approval, and finally dispatch. Scroll down to the table of completed tasks and look for the dispatch entry. The exact wording of that row can vary from state to state.

That row carries the dispatch date and the Speed Post number. If dispatch is still listed as pending, or there's no dispatch row at all, your card hasn't been posted yet. Skip to the section on what to do when your DL isn't dispatched.

4

Copy the number and check the address

Copy the tracking number exactly. Take a screenshot of the status page with the date visible too, because it's useful evidence if you need to chase the RTO later.

While you're there, look at the address on your application. The card goes to that address, not wherever you live today. If you've moved since applying, read the address section below before the postman tries to deliver it.

5

Track it on India Post

Paste the number into our Speed Post tracker (or India Post's website, indiapost.gov.in). You'll see each scan: booked, bagged, dispatched, received at your delivery post office, out for delivery, delivered.

If it says "consignment details not found" on the day of dispatch, don't panic. Booking data can take a while to reach the tracking system. Our guide to "Consignment Details Not Found" explains how long to wait.

Check your SMS too. Some states text the Speed Post number to the mobile number on your application when the card is posted. If your number has changed, update it on Sarathi under Others → Mobile Number Update so you don't miss the delivery call or SMS.

What a DL Speed Post Tracking Number Looks Like

People often confuse three different numbers. Only one of them tracks the parcel.

Number What it looks like Use it for
Speed Post number 13 characters: 2 letters, 9 digits, then "IN". Speed Post numbers generally start with E, for example EA123456789IN (example only) Tracking the card on India Post or our tracker
Application number The number on your Sarathi acknowledgement and fee receipt Checking status on Sarathi
DL number Starts with your state code and RTO code, e.g. MH01, DL04, KA05 DigiLocker, mParivahan and police checks

If India Post says your number is invalid, count the characters. A missing letter or a "0" typed as "O" is a common culprit. Our consignment number guide breaks down every prefix.

How Long Does a Driving Licence Take to Arrive?

Timelines differ by state and by how busy your RTO is. This is the general sequence:

Test passed and DL approved

The RTO approves the licence and your DL number is generated. "Approved" is an office stage. It does not mean the card has been printed or posted.

Card printed and posted: varies by RTO

The RTO prints the smart card and hands it to India Post. How long this takes depends on your state and RTO. Card shortages or backlogs at busy RTOs can stretch it.

Speed Post delivery: usually a few days

Your DL is usually posted inside your own state. India Post's delivery norm for Speed Post within the same state is 1–4 days (1–2 days for local delivery), and delivery through a branch post office takes one additional day. See our Speed Post delivery time guide for route-wise norms.

30 days and still not dispatched? Time to act

A practical rule of thumb: after about a month with no dispatch row on Sarathi, stop waiting and contact the RTO. Steps below.

A worked example: you pass your test in Pune on 1 October and the licence is approved the same day. Check Sarathi every few days for a dispatch entry. Once it appears, the card should normally reach you within a few days. If 1 November comes and Sarathi still shows nothing, call the RTO.

What You See vs What To Do

Match what Sarathi and the Speed Post tracking show you against this table.

What you see What it means What to do
Sarathi: approved, no dispatch row Card not yet printed or posted Wait up to about 30 days from approval, then contact the RTO
Sarathi: dispatched, number shown Card handed to India Post Track the number; keep your phone on
Tracking: "Consignment details not found" Booking data not uploaded yet, or number mistyped Recheck the number; try again after a day or two
Tracking: "Out for delivery" Postman has it today Stay reachable and keep photo ID ready
Tracking: delivery attempted / addressee not available Card is back at your delivery post office Collect it with ID as soon as possible
Tracking: returned / sent back to sender Card is going back to the RTO Contact the RTO to collect it or get it re-dispatched
Tracking: delivered, but you don't have it Handed to someone else, or a wrong entry Ask family and security first, then complain the same day

DL Approved but Not Dispatched After 30 Days? Contact the RTO

Speed Post can only deliver what the RTO hands over. If there's no dispatch entry after a month, the delay is on the RTO side: card printing, a stock shortage, or a file waiting for someone's sign-off. Here's how to push it along without an agent.

1

Call or visit your RTO with your application number

Ask three direct questions: Has my card been printed? Has it been posted? What is the Speed Post number? This is exactly what Parivahan's FAQ tells applicants to do when a licence is approved but not delivered.

2

Carry proof

Take your application acknowledgement, fee receipt, photo ID and a dated screenshot of your Sarathi status. Note the name of the person you speak to and the date.

3

Put it in writing if nothing moves

Give a short written request to the RTO and get a receiving stamp on your copy. Something like: "My driving licence, application no. ______, was approved on ______ but has not been dispatched. Kindly dispatch it or share the Speed Post number."

4

Escalate online

If the RTO doesn't respond, file a grievance on your state transport department's portal or on CPGRAMS, the central public grievance portal (pgportal.gov.in). Quote your application number and attach the stamped letter and screenshots.

Honestly, a phone call to the RTO's dealing section often sorts it out. Only escalate after you've asked once and been ignored.

Drive Now: Your Digital DL in DigiLocker or mParivahan

You don't need the plastic card to drive. In August 2018 the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways told states to accept a driving licence shown through DigiLocker or the mParivahan app as valid under the Motor Vehicles Act, at par with the physical licence. Those electronic records are legally recognised under the Information Technology Act, 2000.

DigiLocker

Sign in with your mobile number or Aadhaar, search for "Driving Licence" from the Ministry of Road Transport, enter your DL number, and fetch it into your locker.

mParivahan

The Ministry's own app. Sign in, add your DL number, and it pulls your licence details from the government's licence records.

A screenshot or a photo is not the same thing. Show the licence inside the app, fetched from the government record. And if DigiLocker can't find your DL, Parivahan's FAQ says your licence details have to be migrated to Sarathi by your RTO, so ask them to do it.

If Delivery Fails: Collect from the Post Office or Get It Re-dispatched

A driving licence isn't an ordinary letter. Under the Post Office Regulations, 2024, items containing a passport, PAN card or driving licence are handed over only after the postman checks the recipient's identity. So if nobody with ID is home, the card goes back to the post office.

After that, the clock matters. The same regulations say an undelivered item is ordinarily kept at the post office it's addressed to for seven days after all enquiries to find the addressee have failed, and an item the addressee doesn't take delivery of within the period India Post sets is returned to the sender. For your DL, the sender is the RTO.

Card still at the post office: go and collect it

The last scan on tracking names your delivery post office. Go during working hours with original photo ID (Aadhaar, passport, voter ID), the Speed Post number, and the intimation slip if the postman left one. Since the card needs your ID check, go yourself rather than sending someone. Our Delivery Attempted guide walks through the counter process.

Card already returned to the RTO

Contact the RTO with your application number and ID. Depending on the office, they'll either hand it over at the counter or post it again. If the address was the problem, fix it first, otherwise it will bounce back a second time.

Post office not helping?

Call India Post's toll-free number 1800 266 6868 with your Speed Post number. If tracking says delivered but you never got the card, read what to do when Speed Post shows delivered but not received, and see our Speed Post complaint guide.

Moved House Since Applying? Read This

An out-of-date address is an easy way for a licence to end up back at the RTO. The card goes to the address on your application, and a postman who can't find you there won't forward it on a guess.

  • Before dispatch: ask the RTO whether the address can still be corrected on your application.
  • After dispatch: tell the family or neighbours at the old address to expect it, and stay in touch with the delivery post office there. Remember the card will only be handed over after an ID check.
  • Incomplete address: a missing flat number or landmark can get an item returned. If tracking shows a failed attempt, call the delivery post office the same day and give them clear directions and your phone number.
