Every physical PAN card issued in India is dispatched via India Post Speed Post. Whether you applied through Protean (formerly NSDL e-Gov) or UTIITSL, once the Income Tax Department allots your PAN and the card is printed, it is handed over to India Post for delivery to the address in your application.
A 13-character Speed Post consignment number is generated at booking — the same format as any Speed Post shipment. It is published on your PAN application status page, and once you have it, you can track delivery in real time.

Step 1 — Find Your PAN Card Speed Post Consignment Number
The consignment number is not on your email confirmation. You have to check the status page of the portal where you applied. Where you look depends on the intermediary:
If you applied via Protean (NSDL e-Gov)
- 1 Open tin.tin.nsdl.com → "Track PAN / TAN Application Status"
- 2 Choose "PAN – New / Change Request" and enter your 15-digit Acknowledgement Number (from the application receipt)
- 3 Once the status shows "Dispatched" or "PAN card dispatched via Speed Post", scroll down for the consignment number — a 13-character string like EE123456789IN
If you applied via UTIITSL
- 1 Open utiitsl.com → "Track PAN Card"
- 2 Enter your Application Coupon Number or PAN number and date of birth
- 3 The status page shows the India Post consignment number once dispatched. Copy the 13-character number.
If you applied via the Income Tax e-filing portal (Instant e-PAN)
Instant e-PAN through incometax.gov.in issues only a digital PAN (PDF) — no physical card is dispatched. If you also need the physical card, you must place a reprint request through Protean or UTIITSL, and it will then be dispatched by Speed Post with a trackable consignment number.
No consignment number showing yet? It only appears after the status changes to "Dispatched via Speed Post". If your status still shows "Under Process", "Printed", or "Sent to India Post", the tracking number has not been generated yet. Check again in 24–48 hours.

How Long Does PAN Card Delivery Take?
The total time from PAN application to physical card in hand has two stages: issuance (how long the tax department takes to allot PAN and print the card) and delivery (how long India Post takes to deliver by Speed Post).

Need PAN urgently? Your e-PAN (PDF) is emailed as soon as PAN is allotted — usually within 5–7 days of application. e-PAN has the same legal validity as the physical card for opening bank accounts, filing ITR, and KYC. You do not have to wait for the physical card for most purposes.
Reading Your PAN Card Tracking — What Each Status Means
When you track your PAN card consignment on SpeedIndiaPost.com, you will see a sequence of status updates. Here is what each one means for your PAN card specifically:
Item Booked
Your PAN card was handed to India Post at the dispatch centre (usually the printing bureau).
Item Bagged
The article is sorted and packed into a mail bag destined for your city's sorting hub.
Dispatched / In Transit
The bag is moving between sorting hubs, typically by air or road. This status can persist for 1–3 days for long-distance shipments.
Reached Destination
Your PAN card is now at the delivery post office serving your PIN code. Delivery typically happens within 1–2 working days after this scan.
Out for Delivery
The postman is on the way to your address today. Stay reachable — PAN cards require the addressee to be present with ID for handover.
Delivery Attempted
The postman came but could not deliver. This is common for PAN cards — the addressee was not home or ID could not be verified. Read the section below on what to do next.

Your PAN card was handed over. Verify by checking who signed for it — you or an authorised family member.

Special Rules — PAN Card Delivery Is Addressee-Only
PAN cards are treated as government identity documents.
Unlike ordinary Speed Post parcels, India Post postmen are instructed to deliver PAN cards only to the addressee in person, after verifying photo ID. A family member or neighbour generally cannot sign for it on your behalf.
This is why so many people see "Delivery Attempted" or "Not Delivered" on their PAN card tracking even when someone was home — the postman came, the addressee was not physically present, and no one else could receive the card.

Delivery Attempted But You Were Not Home — What Now
This is the most common issue with PAN card delivery. The status shows "Delivery Attempted" and you need to act within the holding window.
Look for the intimation slip
Check your letterbox, door, or apartment reception. The postman leaves a small paper slip with the delivery post office name and address.
Track and identify the delivery post office
On SpeedIndiaPost.com, the location of the last scan shows which post office is holding your PAN card. Note the name and area.
Visit the delivery post office in person
This is the fastest option for PAN cards. Bring your intimation slip (if you have it), original photo ID matching the name in your PAN application, and the consignment number. Ask for the Speed Post counter.
Or call and request re-delivery
If you cannot visit, find the post office number via indiapost.gov.in's Post Office Locator and request the postman to redeliver the next working day. Confirm you will be home with ID ready.
Do not wait longer than 7 days
Speed Post holds undelivered articles for approximately 7 days from the first attempt. After that, the PAN card is returned to sender (Protean/UTIITSL). Re-dispatch requires a separate request and fee.

If Your PAN Card Was Returned to Sender
If tracking shows "Item Returned to Sender" or "Returned undelivered", your PAN card is back with the printing bureau (Protean or UTIITSL). You now have three options:
Request re-dispatch
Log into the same portal (Protean/UTIITSL) and raise a re-dispatch request. Update the address if needed. A nominal fee applies.
Download e-PAN
Your digital PAN was already issued. Download it from Protean or UTIITSL portal — it is legally valid for all purposes including KYC and ITR filing.
Order a reprint
If you need a physical card, request a reprint via the same portal. Charges are minimal (₹50 for domestic, higher for international address).
