Before you head to the post office, the first question is always: how much will this cost? Speed Post charges are calculated on two factors — weight of your article and distance between origin and destination. There is no flat rate for all of India; the post office zones your consignment automatically based on the destination PIN code.
This guide gives you the complete official rate table with all five distance zones, explains the 18% GST that is added at the counter, covers weight limits and rounding rules, and lists everything that comes included with every Speed Post booking — at no extra charge.
How Speed Post Pricing Works
India Post uses a weight slab + distance zone model for Speed Post charges. Two variables determine what you pay:
- Weight slab — Your article is weighed and placed in the nearest slab (first slab up to 500g, then each additional 500g). If your parcel is 1.1 kg, you are charged for 1.5 kg.
- Distance zone — Based on the straight-line distance between origin and destination post offices: Local, up to 200 km, 201–1,000 km, 1,001–2,000 km, or above 2,000 km.
- 18% GST — Added to every Speed Post transaction at the counter. The rate table below shows base rates before GST.
There is no difference in pricing between documents and parcels for domestic Speed Post. A 200g letter and a 200g small parcel going the same distance cost exactly the same.
Speed Post Rate Chart 2025 — All Zones
All amounts in Indian Rupees (₹). 18% GST is added at the counter — not included in the table below.
| Weight | Local | Up to 200 km | 201–1,000 km | 1,001–2,000 km | Above 2,000 km |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 50 g | ₹15 | ₹35 | ₹35 | ₹35 | ₹35 |
| 51 g – 200 g | ₹25 | ₹35 | ₹40 | ₹60 | ₹70 |
| 201 g – 500 g | ₹30 | ₹50 | ₹60 | ₹80 | ₹90 |
| Each additional 500 g | +₹10 | +₹15 | +₹30 | +₹40 | +₹50 |
Always add 18% GST to the base rate above. A ₹40 charge becomes ₹47.20 at the counter. Ask for a bill that itemises the base fare and GST separately.
How to Calculate Your Speed Post Charge — Examples
Example 1 — Document within the same city (Local)
- Weight: 120 g → falls in the 51–200 g slab
- Zone: Local (both offices within same city)
- Base rate: ₹25
- GST (18%): ₹4.50
- Total you pay: ₹29.50
Example 2 — Parcel from Mumbai to Delhi (above 1,000 km)
- Weight: 800 g → falls in 201–500 g base + 1 additional 500 g slab
- Zone: 1,001–2,000 km
- Base rate: ₹80 + ₹40 = ₹120
- GST (18%): ₹21.60
- Total you pay: ₹141.60
Example 3 — Large parcel from Chennai to Guwahati (above 2,000 km)
- Weight: 2 kg → 201–500 g base + 3 additional 500 g slabs
- Zone: Above 2,000 km
- Base rate: ₹90 + (3 × ₹50) = ₹240
- GST (18%): ₹43.20
- Total you pay: ₹283.20
Weight rounding rule: India Post always rounds up to the next 500 g slab. A 501 g parcel is charged as 1,000 g. Weigh your parcel at home first if possible — shaving even a few grams below a slab boundary can save money on long-distance shipments.

Tips to Save on Speed Post Charges
Weigh before you go
A kitchen scale at home can help you stay just under a weight slab boundary. Crossing 500 g by even 1 g costs you an entire extra slab on long-distance shipments.
Use lighter packaging
Bubble wrap and foam add weight. For non-fragile documents, a padded envelope (about 20–30 g) adds far less than a thick cardboard box.
Choose Speed Post over private couriers for long distance
For consignments above 500 g going across the country, Speed Post charges are often 30–50% lower than private couriers of comparable delivery speed.
Split heavy consignments only if it makes sense
One 1.2 kg parcel costs less than two separate 600 g parcels (each with their own base rate). Calculate both scenarios before booking.
Skip unnecessary add-ons
You already get ₹1 lakh free insurance. Don't pay extra for coverage you don't need. Save the AD card charge if you don't need a physical proof-of-delivery — online tracking serves the same purpose.
Track Your Speed Post After Booking
Once you have paid at the counter, your receipt will show a 13-character consignment number — something like EK123456789IN or CP987654321IN. Use that number to track your parcel from booking to doorstep delivery.
SpeedIndiaPost.com gives you real-time Speed Post tracking with a full event history, delivery status, and an interactive map — completely free, no account needed. Just enter your consignment number and see where your parcel is right now.
