Cheque Book Speed Post Tracking — SBI, HDFC, PNB and Other Banks

Ordered a cheque book and now waiting at the door? Here is how to find its tracking number for your bank, check where it is, and what to do if it doesn't turn up.

Got a 13-character number ending in "IN"?

That's an India Post Speed Post number. Paste it in our tracker to see exactly where your cheque book is right now.

Track Now →

If your bank sent your cheque book by Speed Post, the bank's dispatch SMS will usually have a 13-character India Post number like EK123456789IN. Put that number into our free tracker or India Post's website and you'll see every scan, from booking to delivery.

Here's the catch most guides miss: not every bank uses Speed Post. SBI is the big one that does. ICICI and Kotak say in their own help pages that they use couriers, and HDFC cheque books have also gone by private courier. If your number doesn't look like the format above, it's a courier AWB number and India Post will show nothing for it.

Below: which banks use what, where each bank hides the tracking number, how long it really takes, and exactly what to do if the cheque book is late, returned, or marked delivered when it isn't.

Speed Post or Courier? Which Banks Use What

Banks change their delivery partners from time to time, and some use different partners for different areas. So treat this table as a starting point and always trust your dispatch SMS over anything else.

Bank How it usually travels Where to find the tracking number
SBI India Post Speed Post Dispatch SMS, YONO, OnlineSBI, IVR on 1800 1234
PNB Check the SMS SMS, or ask your branch
Bank of Baroda Check the SMS SMS, or ask your branch
HDFC Bank Has gone by private courier (AWB number) Dispatch SMS, or HDFC customer care
ICICI Bank Courier Internet Banking / iMobile → Services → Check Status → Track Deliverables
Kotak Courier Dispatch SMS with courier company name and AWB number

The 5-second test: an India Post number is always 2 letters + 9 digits + "IN" (for example EK123456789IN). Anything else — all digits, or a code starting with the courier's own letters — is a courier AWB. Track that on the courier company's website, not India Post. More on the format in our consignment number guide.

Where to Find Your Tracking Number — Bank by Bank

Start with your SMS inbox. Search for your bank's name or the word "cheque". If the SMS isn't there (it happens, especially if your registered mobile number is old), use these routes.

1

SBI — four ways to get the Speed Post number

  • SMS: SBI sends the Speed Post tracking number to your registered mobile once the cheque book is dispatched.
  • YONO app: SBI lists "cheque book dispatch status" as one of YONO's cheque book services. Open YONO, go to Service Requests, then Manage Cheque Book, and look for the dispatch status. Menu labels shift a little between app updates, so if you don't see it straight away, look for "Status" or "History".
  • OnlineSBI (net banking): log in, open Request & Enquiries → Cheque Book Services, and look for the status of your request. If you can't find the dispatch number there, use the IVR below.
  • Phone (IVR): call 1800 1234 or 1800 2100, pick your language, press 2 (ATM Card & Chequebook services), then 5 (Cheque Book Tracking). Enter the last 4 digits of your account number. The IVR reads out the dispatch status and also sends it to you by SMS.

Honestly, the IVR is the quickest route if you can't find the SMS. It works without internet and you don't need to remember any password.

2

PNB — SMS first, branch second

PNB doesn't publish a step-by-step cheque book tracking guide that we could confirm. Start with the dispatch SMS on your registered mobile, and check your cheque book request in PNB internet banking or the app if it shows a status there.

If you find a number in the India Post format, track it with us. If you can't find one, ask your branch for the dispatch number and the date it went out.

3

Bank of Baroda — SMS first, branch second

Bank of Baroda doesn't publish a step-by-step tracking guide for cheque books that we could confirm. Look for the dispatch SMS on your registered mobile. No SMS after a week or so? Call customer care or visit your home branch and ask for the dispatch number and the date it went out. Then check whether it's a Speed Post number (ends in "IN") or a courier number.

4

HDFC Bank — expect a courier AWB

You can request an HDFC cheque book online through HDFC's Insta Services or at a branch. HDFC cheque books have travelled by private courier with an AWB number (one 2019 customer complaint names ACE Express, with AWB numbers starting "HD").

So if your HDFC number shows "not found" on India Post, that's normal. Track it on the courier's site named in the SMS, or ask HDFC customer care.

5

ICICI and Kotak — courier, with their own tracking

ICICI: log in to Internet Banking or iMobile and go to Services → Check Status → Track Deliverables. You can search by account number, and it covers cheque books, cards and statements sent in the last 90 days. If the item came back, you can ask for re-dispatch right there.

Kotak: once the cheque book is dispatched, Kotak sends an SMS with the courier company's name and the AWB number. Use those on the courier's website.

How to Track Your Cheque Book on India Post

Once you have the 13-character Speed Post number, tracking takes a minute:

1

Copy the number exactly

Copy it from the SMS rather than typing it. Mixing up O and 0, or I and 1, is an easy way to end up with "no record found".

2

Paste it into a tracker

Use SpeedIndiaPost.com (free, no login), or the Track option on India Post's website, indiapost.gov.in. Both show the same India Post scan history.

3

Read the latest event and its location

The top line tells you the current status and which post office scanned it. The office named against "Out for Delivery" is your delivery post office — note it down in case you need to collect.

4

No result yet? Give it a day

Tracking shows nothing until the packet is booked and scanned at the post office, and that can be a little after the SMS arrives. If nothing shows after a working day or two, read consignment details not found.

How Long Does Cheque Book Delivery Take?

Think of it in two parts: the bank's printing and dispatch time, then the delivery time. Here's what a normal journey looks like:

Day 0 — Request placed

You request through the app, net banking, ATM, SMS or branch. Personalised cheque books carry your printed name, so they're printed and then sent to you rather than handed over the counter.

Around day 1–3 — Printed and dispatched

SBI cheque books are generally dispatched within 3 working days of the request. This is when the tracking SMS arrives.

In transit — Speed Post or courier

Transit depends on distance. Same city can be a day or two; a remote PIN code can take several more. Our Speed Post delivery time guide has realistic numbers by distance.

Delivered — In your hands

Kotak says 7 working days from the request. ICICI says the first delivery attempt happens within 5 working days. For SBI, add Speed Post transit time to the dispatch window; remote areas take longer.

Example: you request an SBI cheque book from YONO in Nagpur on a Monday. If it's dispatched by Wednesday or Thursday, you get the SMS then, and it could reach your local post office early the next week. Count working days only — Sundays and bank or postal holidays don't count.

What Each Tracking Status Means for Your Cheque Book

Status you see What it means What you should do
Item Booked The bank's printing centre handed it to India Post Nothing yet — it's on its way
Item Bagged / Dispatched / In Transit Moving between sorting hubs Wait; gaps of a day or two between scans are common
Reached Destination Post Office At your local delivery office Stay reachable on your phone; delivery is close
Item Sent Out for Delivery With the postman today Make sure someone is home to receive it
Delivery Attempted / Door Locked Postman came, couldn't deliver Call or visit the delivery post office the same day
Item Returned to Sender Going back to the bank Contact your branch for re-dispatch or collection
Item Delivered India Post has recorded it as delivered Not with you? Act today — see below

ICICI's Track Deliverables uses its own labels: Dispatched, In-Transit, Attempted, Shipment delivered, and Undelivered/Returned to Bank. ICICI itself notes there can be a lag before courier updates show up. For the full list of India Post statuses, see what each Speed Post status means.

Cheque Book Not Received? Do This, in This Order

No SMS, no tracking number at all

Check the request status in your app or net banking first. If it still shows pending after about a week, call customer care. Also check your registered mobile number is current — an old number means you'll never see the dispatch SMS.

Tracking says "Delivery Attempted"

The cheque book is sitting at your delivery post office, and it's only kept for a limited time before going back. Go with photo ID and the tracking number, or call and ask for another attempt. Our delivery attempted guide walks you through it.

Returned to the bank

The usual reason is an old or incomplete address in the bank's records. Fix the address at your branch first, then ask for re-dispatch — or simply collect it from the branch with ID. Kotak, for example, asks you to update the address and then call its helpline (1800 4100) to re-dispatch. ICICI lets you request re-dispatch from Track Deliverables and pick your address, your base branch, or another ICICI branch.

Says "Delivered" but you don't have it

Ask family, neighbours and the building guard first. If it's really missing, don't wait: ask your bank to stop payment on the whole cheque series the same day, then file a complaint with India Post. See delivered but not received for the complaint steps.

What to tell your branch (copy and adapt)

I requested a cheque book for account ending XXXX on [date] through [YONO / net banking / branch]. Dispatch number: [number, if you have it]. It has not reached me. Current tracking status: [status]. Please confirm whether it has been returned to the branch. If yes, I'd like to collect it here / have it re-dispatched to my registered address. If it is lost, please stop the cheque series [first leaf number] to [last leaf number] and issue a new cheque book.

Keep Your Cheque Book Safe While It's on the Way

A cheque book in the wrong hands is a real risk, so treat this delivery like cash.

Never sign leaves in advance

Don't sign any cheque until the book is physically in your hands, and never keep signed blank leaves. A signed leaf from a lost book is the worst case.

Check the envelope and the leaves

If the envelope looks opened or torn, point it out to the postman before signing. Once inside, count the leaves and check the serial numbers run without a gap.

Stop payment if anything is missing

Missing leaves or a lost book? Ask your bank to stop payment on those cheque numbers straight away. SBI, for instance, lets you place a stop cheque request in YONO.

Don't share OTPs with "delivery agents"

No postman or courier needs your bank OTP or PIN to hand over a cheque book. Anyone asking for it is not genuine.
