Post Office Timings in India: Working Hours, Saturday and Sunday
Planning a trip to the post office to book a Speed Post, collect a parcel or deposit in your savings account? Here's what the rules actually say about opening hours, why your local office may differ from the one across town, and how to check before you leave home.
Going to collect an item?
Track it first. The tracking history shows which office is holding it, so you go to the right counter the first time.
Short answer: there's no single national opening and closing time for post offices in India. The Post Office Regulations, 2024 say counter services such as booking and posting items should generally be available for six hours on a normal working day, and money remittance and Savings Bank work for six hours too. Enquiries are handled for the office's entire working hours. Branch post offices, the small rural ones, open for a maximum of five hours a day.
The exact clock times are set locally. The regulations let the Circle, Regional and Divisional Heads fix each office's hours based on local convenience and when mail arrives and leaves. That's why one office opens at 9 and another at 10, and why a big Head Post Office in a city often stays open well past the small office near your home.
Saturday is normally a working day at post offices. Sundays and gazetted holidays are normally closed, except at specific offices that have been given Sunday or round-the-clock booking. Plenty of websites claim post offices close on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays. That's the rule for banks, and we found no Department of Posts order applying it to post office counters.
What the Rules Actually Say About Post Office Hours
Regulation 3 of the Post Office Regulations, 2024 (notified in the Gazette of India on 16 December 2024) sets the standard business hours for normal weekdays that aren't post office or government holidays.
| Work at the counter | Standard business hours |
|---|---|
| References and enquiries | The entire working hours of the office |
| Counter services: booking and posting items (Speed Post, parcels), collecting insurance premiums | Six hours |
| Money remittance: Electronic Money Order, Indian Postal Order | Six hours |
| Savings Bank | Six hours |
| Branch post offices (rural) | Open for a maximum of five hours a day |
Notice what this means in practice. The building may be open longer than the counters. Staff are often inside before the counters open and after they close, sorting and dispatching mail. So "the post office is open" and "the Speed Post counter is taking bookings" aren't always the same thing.
Regulation 4 also lets the Circle Head or Regional Head open offices on Sundays and holidays when the public needs it, decide which transactions are available during those hours, and cap the number of items one person can book during a rush. If a counter clerk tells you there's a limit on how many parcels you can book today, this is where that power comes from.
Head Post Office, Sub Post Office or Branch Office: Why Hours Differ
India Post runs three main kinds of office, and the kind you visit makes the biggest difference to its hours.
Head Post Office / GPO
The bigger office that oversees a group of sub post offices, usually in a city or district town. It handles more work, so it's the most likely to have longer counter hours, evening booking or Sunday booking.
Sub Post Office
The neighbourhood office most people use. It follows the standard six-hour counter pattern, with exact times fixed by the division.
Branch Post Office
The village office, often run by a Gramin Dak Sevak. By regulation it opens for no more than five hours a day, so arrive early.
About the "9 AM to 5 PM" you see everywhere. Many websites quote 9 to 5, or 8 to 4 "in some states", as if it were a national rule. It isn't written in the regulations. Your office's real hours are whatever its division has fixed, so treat any number you read online, including on Google, as a starting point and confirm it.
Is the Post Office Open on Saturday?
Yes, normally. Post offices that serve the public work Monday to Saturday. A Karnataka Circle memo issued in January 2025 under the new regulations, for example, applied the six-hour counter rule to "normal weekdays including Saturday". In 2024, a postal employees' union wrote to the Department of Posts asking for a five-day week or leave on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays, which only makes sense because staff currently work those Saturdays. We found no order granting that request.
Where does the "closed on 2nd and 4th Saturday" idea come from? Banks. The Reserve Bank of India's holiday list says all scheduled and non-scheduled banks observe a holiday on the second and fourth Saturdays, and many websites simply copied that rule onto post offices. Administrative postal offices (divisional and circle offices) follow a different pattern from the counters, which adds to the confusion.
Two things can still catch you out on a Saturday:
- A holiday that falls on a Saturday. If a gazetted holiday or a state holiday lands on a Saturday, the office is shut that day like any other holiday.
- One-off closures. Offices can close for special reasons. In August 2025, for example, all post offices in the Chandigarh and Punjab circles closed to the public on a Saturday and Sunday while they moved to India Post's new software system.
Some sites also say Saturdays are always "half days". We couldn't confirm that as a national rule. Some offices may keep shorter hours on Saturday, so if your errand matters, go in the morning or ask the office a day before.
Sundays, Holidays and Late-Night Booking
Most post offices are closed on Sundays and gazetted holidays. But the regulations allow Sunday and holiday opening, and India Post has been using that more. A few real examples:
Hyderabad GPO: Speed Post booking through the night
From 15 October 2025, Hyderabad General Post Office started a night shift from 8 PM to 8 AM for booking and dispatch of Speed Post documents.
Andhra Pradesh: 24-hour booking in 11 cities
In February 2026, India Post launched round-the-clock Speed Post and parcel booking in 11 Andhra Pradesh cities, including Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Guntur and Tirupati, and extended working hours by one to two hours at 242 other major town post offices in the state.
Your city may have something similar
These arrangements are announced office by office, usually through local news and notices at the counter. If you need to book on a Sunday or late at night, ask your Head Post Office whether it, or another office in the city, offers it.
Sunday booking isn't Sunday everything. An office that takes Speed Post bookings at night or on a Sunday won't necessarily have its savings, money order or parcel-collection counters open at the same time. Ask specifically about the service you need.
Lunch Break and Counter Cut-Off Times
Lunch break: you'll see "1 to 1:30 PM" or "1:30 to 2:30 PM" on many sites. Neither appears in the regulations, and we couldn't find any national lunch-break rule. In practice, a small office with one or two staff may pause a counter for a while in the early afternoon, and bigger offices often keep at least one counter running. If you can't afford to wait, go in the morning.
Cut-off times: three different times matter, and they're often confused:
| Time | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Office working hours | When the building is staffed. You can usually make enquiries any time during these hours. |
| Counter (business) hours | When a particular service, like Speed Post booking or Savings Bank, takes new work. Different counters can close at different times. |
| Dispatch time | When the day's mail bag leaves the office. An item booked after it may only leave the next working day, even though you got a receipt today. |
If a Speed Post must leave today, ask the clerk one simple question: "Will this go in today's dispatch?" If the answer is no, a bigger office nearby with a later dispatch may save you a day. Our Speed Post delivery time guide explains how that one day affects the delivery date.
How to Find Your Post Office's Exact Timings
- 1Identify the right office. Use "Locate Post Office" on India Post's website, indiapost.gov.in, to find the office that serves your area. If you're collecting an item, track it on SpeedIndiaPost.com: the office shown against the latest event is the one holding it.
- 2Check Google Maps, but don't trust it blindly. Many offices have listings with hours. They're often added by users and can be out of date, especially after a local change in timings.
- 3Phone the office. Ask about the exact counter you need: "Until what time can I book Speed Post?" or "Is the savings counter open on Saturday?"
- 4Call the India Post helpline. 1800 266 6868 is available from 8 AM to 8 PM, and its automated (IVRS) service runs 24x7, except on gazetted holidays.
- 5Read the board at the office. Once you've been once, note the counter timings displayed there. It's the most reliable source for that office.
Festive Season and Rush Periods
Around festivals, when people post rakhis, sweets and gifts, some offices extend their booking hours. For the Raksha Bandhan rush in 2025, for example, the Department of Posts told Head Post Offices and larger Sub Post Offices to keep their booking (MPCM) counters open until at least 5 PM from 6 to 8 August. The regulations also allow the opposite: limiting how many items one customer can book during a rush, so everyone in the queue gets served.
These changes are announced locally and for a few days at a time, so don't assume last year's extended hours apply this year. If you're sending gifts, book a few days early and see our guide on how to send Speed Post so you're ready at the counter.
Tips to Get Your Work Done in One Visit
Go early in the day
Morning visits avoid the early-afternoon slowdown and leave time to come back if something is missing.
Carry ID for collections
Collecting a held item? Take photo ID and the intimation slip or consignment number. See what to do after a failed delivery.
Pack and address at home
A ready parcel with a clear address takes minutes at the counter. Packing there can push you past the cut-off.
Check the holiday list
State holidays differ. Before a long weekend, confirm whether your office is open on the day you plan to go.
