How to Send Diwali Gifts and Sweets by Speed Post — Booking Deadlines and Packing Tips 2026

Living away from home this Diwali? Here's the last safe day to book so the box reaches your family before Dhanteras, which mithai survive the journey, how to pack them, what it costs, and what the counter will refuse.

Yes, you can send Diwali gifts and sweets by Speed Post. Dry mithai like kaju katli and soan papdi, dry fruits, namkeen, clothes, diyas and decorations all go through fine if they're packed so nothing can leak, spoil or break. Diwali falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026 and Dhanteras on Friday, 6 November. Diwali is also a central government holiday, so don't plan on anything being delivered that day.

The short answer on timing: if your family lives in another state, book by Wednesday, 28 October. Metro to metro, aim for Friday, 30 October (Monday, 2 November at the very latest). Within the same city, you have until Wednesday, 4 November. For example, a 1.5 kg box of sweets from Delhi to your parents in Patna costs ₹228 plus GST by Speed Post at the current retail rates.

Two of the easiest mistakes to avoid are booking two days too late and putting rasgullas in a thin cardboard box.

Last Safe Booking Dates for Diwali 2026

India Post's published delivery norms for Speed Post Parcel are: Local 1–2 days, Metro to Metro 1–3 days, State Capital to State Capital 1–4 days, Same State 1–4 days, Rest of the Country 4–5 days, plus one extra day when delivery goes through a branch post office (the small offices that serve villages). We've counted forward from those norms, skipping Sundays, and kept a few days' buffer for the festive rush. Treat the "Last date" column as the real deadline, not a target.

Where the gift is going India Post norm Book by (relaxed) Last date (tight)
Same city (Local) 1–2 days Mon 2 Nov Wed 4 Nov
Metro to metro (e.g. Mumbai → Delhi) 1–3 days Fri 30 Oct Mon 2 Nov
Same state, or state capital to state capital 1–4 days Thu 29 Oct Sat 31 Oct
Another state, small town or village 4–5 days (+1 for branch office) Mon 26 Oct Wed 28 Oct
Heavy box by India Post Parcel (surface) No published norm This week Use Speed Post after Mon 26 Oct

Example: you post a box from Pune to your parents' village near Gorakhpur on Wednesday, 28 October. Five working days takes it to Tuesday, 3 November, and the branch-office day makes it Wednesday, 4 November. That still leaves Thursday to Saturday as cushion before Diwali — and it lands before Dhanteras if nothing goes wrong.

Sending for Bhai Dooj instead? Govardhan Puja is on Monday, 9 November and Bhai Dooj falls around 10–11 November, depending on your calendar. A box booked by the dates above will arrive well before then. If you miss the Diwali cut-off, you can still aim for Bhai Dooj.

Book in the morning. Post offices send mail out in batches at fixed times, so a parcel booked late in the afternoon may only leave the next day. If you're booking on the last date, go early and ask the clerk what time today's dispatch closes.

October–November Holidays That Slow Delivery

Parcels barely move when post offices are closed, so count working days, not calendar days. Between today (22 October) and Diwali, these are the dates to plan around:

Sundays — 25 October, 1 November and 8 November

Most post offices are closed on Sundays, so don't count a Sunday as a delivery day for regular Speed Post. India Post has 24-hour booking at selected offices in some cities, but that only helps you post the box. It doesn't make Sunday a delivery day.

Thursday 29 October — Karva Chauth (closed in some states)

Under the central government's 2026 holiday list, each state's coordination committee picks three extra holidays from an optional list, and Karva Chauth is on it. Where it was picked, offices may be shut that day. Ask your local post office, and if you're sending to North India, don't book on the last possible day.

Sunday 8 November — Diwali (central government holiday)

Deepavali is a compulsory central government holiday in 2026, and it falls on a Sunday anyway. Plan for the box to reach by Saturday 7 November at the latest — ideally before Dhanteras on Friday 6 November, when most families start celebrating.

Govardhan Puja (9 November) and Bhai Dooj (11 November) are only restricted holidays on the central list. Individual staff may take them off, but the post office itself normally stays open. Saturday hours vary from office to office, so check the timings board before you plan a Saturday booking. For the earlier part of the season, see our list of post office holidays in October 2026.

Which Diwali Sweets Travel Well — and Which Don't

Your box may spend four or five days in bags, vans and sorting hubs with no refrigeration. India Post's rules don't list sweets by name. What they ban is anything "filthy, noxious or deleterious" or likely to damage other mail. So the clerk is really asking one question: could this leak, rot or smell inside a mail bag? If the answer is yes, expect a refusal.

Travel well

  • Kaju katli, badam barfi and other dry nut sweets
  • Soan papdi in its sealed shop box
  • Besan laddu, dry fruit laddu, chikki, gajak
  • Dry fruits — kaju, badam, kishmish, pista, makhana
  • Faral and namkeen — chakli, chivda, shankarpali, mathri, sev
  • Sealed chocolates and packaged sweets with a printed best-before date

Don't post these

  • Rasgulla, gulab jamun, rasmalai — anything in syrup
  • Fresh khoya and milk sweets — kalakand, milk cake, fresh peda
  • Sweets with cream, malai or chhena filling
  • Homemade halwa, kheer or anything moist
  • Loose ghee or oil in jars that can crack
  • Chocolate in a hot region? Expect it to melt — pack it last, in a separate sealed bag

If you really want your family to have rasgullas or fresh mithai on Diwali, order them from a sweet shop in their town instead and post the dry stuff yourself. It saves a spoiled box.

What You Can't Send: Crackers, Alcohol and Valuables

Firecrackers, sparklers, matchboxes

India Post prohibits "any explosive, inflammable, dangerous, filthy, noxious or deleterious substance." Phuljhadi, anar, chakri, even a small packet of sparklers in a gift hamper — all of it is out. The same goes for camphor tablets and anything else that burns easily.

Alcohol

Leave the bottle of whisky or wine out of the hamper. Spirits are inflammable, and India Post also refuses anything sent in breach of a law. Moving liquor between places is controlled by state excise rules. Even if it got past the counter, a broken bottle would soak every other parcel in the bag.

Dhanteras gold, silver coins and cash

India Post's prohibited list includes gold coins or bullion worth more than ₹20,000. For smaller valuables, declare them at the counter and insure the parcel. Don't tuck cash or a shagun envelope with notes inside the sweets box — send the money by UPI and put a card in the box instead.

Perfume, deodorant sprays and aerosol room fresheners are also risky because they're flammable or pressurised. For the full list, see our guide to Speed Post prohibited items.

How to Pack Diwali Sweets and Gifts for Speed Post

Pack the box as if it will be dropped from waist height, because at some point it probably will be. Here's the order that works:

1

Let homemade food cool and dry completely

Laddus, chakli and chivda go into containers only once they're fully cool. Warm food sweats inside a sealed box and can turn soggy or mouldy within a few days.

2

Airtight, food-grade containers — not glass

Use food-grade plastic or steel tins with tight lids, and run tape around each lid. Thin sweet-shop cartons crush easily, so put those inside a sturdier tin. Line tins with butter paper or food-grade wrap so sweets don't stick or pick up a plastic smell. Avoid glass jars.

3

Seal each container in a zip-lock bag

Ghee-based sweets can sweat oil, and a grease stain on the outside of the carton is exactly what makes a counter clerk hesitate. A second plastic layer keeps oil and smell inside.

4

Corrugated carton, thermocol and no empty space

Use a strong corrugated box just big enough for everything. Line the base and sides with thermocol sheets, then fill gaps with bubble wrap, crumpled newspaper or the clothes you're sending anyway, so nothing rattles when you shake it. Diyas and glass decorations go in the middle, wrapped individually, with sweets around them.

5

Take it to the counter open, seal it there

Clerks may want to see what's inside a food parcel. Carry the carton half-closed with a roll of brown tape and a marker, show the contents if asked, then tape every seam in an H pattern. Some big post offices have set up special Diwali counters. In 2020, for example, Pune GPO ran a counter for Diwali sweets, gifts and toys going abroad, where staff inspected open parcels, packed them in special boxes, wrapped them in plastic and sealed them with India Post logo tape. Ask your head post office whether there's one this year.

6

Label it and write both addresses on the box

Write "Food items — Perishable — Handle with care" and "This side up" in big letters. It isn't an official India Post requirement and won't make the parcel faster, but it may make handlers more careful. Write the full address, 6-digit PIN code and the receiver's mobile number on the carton itself, plus your own address as sender. Our guide on how to write the address on Speed Post has examples.

Weigh the packed box at home. Thermocol and tins add weight. Use a luggage or kitchen scale. If you're at 1.55 kg, taking out one tin to get under 1.5 kg drops you a whole price slab.

Speed Post Charges for a Diwali Gift Parcel

A box of sweets or gifts is booked as a Speed Post Parcel. These are India Post's official retail rates, effective 1 August 2026. The counter works out the zone from the destination, so you don't need to.

All amounts in Indian Rupees (₹). GST is added on top at the counter.

Up to 500 g ₹28 ₹76 ₹82 ₹90
501 g – 1 kg ₹48 ₹101 ₹137 ₹143

Sending a silk saree or silver item? Without insurance, the most you'd get back for a lost box is ₹1,000. If the gift is worth more than that, pay for insurance. Our guide to Speed Post insurance and compensation explains how claims work.

Speed Post vs India Post Parcel vs a private courier

India Post Parcel is cheaper outside your own city and goes by surface. For a box up to 2 kg to another state, it's ₹239 compared with ₹319 by Speed Post. Up to 5 kg, it's ₹515 against ₹686. India Post doesn't publish a delivery norm for it, though, so use it only for clothes, utensils or decorations booked this week. Food should go by Speed Post.

Private couriers often charge by volumetric weight as well as actual weight, and rates vary from company to company, so get a quote for the same packed box and compare the total including GST. The 24 and 48 Speed Post services won't help most families either. They launched in only six metros (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Hyderabad), and 24 and 48 Speed Post themselves are document services with rate slabs up to 500 g. There is a separate 24 Speed Post Parcel service, so if both you and your family are in those cities, ask the counter whether it covers your route and what it costs.

Sending Many Diwali Boxes? Ask for a Business Account

If you're a sweet shop, a home baker taking Diwali orders, or an office sending hampers to clients, don't book 50 boxes at retail rates. India Post's Speed Post Parcel page lists separate contractual rates for business customers, and they are much lower:

Speed Post Parcel, Other States Retail Contractual
Up to 500 g ₹90 ₹47
501 g – 1 kg ₹143 ₹71
1.501 – 2 kg ₹319 ₹190

Both columns exclude GST and are effective from 1 August 2026.

India Post also lists free pickup for eligible corporate and bulk customers, volume-based discounts and cash on delivery. Eligible corporate and contractual customers can also get a credit facility (Book Now Pay Later), so there's no upfront payment at the counter. You may also see India Post's older Business Parcel, a surface service for business customers, in search results. Its rates aren't on the current tariff pages, so ask the head post office whether it's still offered in your area.

Practical tip: contracts take time to set up. If you're reading this in late October with orders already in hand, book at the counter now and set up the account for next season. Individuals can use India Post's Dak Sewa app to calculate postage, book parcels and request doorstep pickup where it's available.

Track Your Diwali Gift Parcel

The 13-character consignment number on your receipt is how you follow the box. WhatsApp a photo of it to your family so they know it's coming and pick up when the postman calls. India Post also sends an SMS to the registered mobile number when the parcel reaches the delivery post office, and again once it's delivered.

Check the progress on SpeedIndiaPost.com: booking, bagging and dispatch scans first, then "out for delivery" and "delivered". Nothing moving over a Sunday is normal. Our guide to what each tracking status means explains each entry. If it's still stuck by Wednesday 4 November, call the delivery post office with the consignment number. Don't wait until Saturday.
