Send Navratri and Dussehra Gifts by Speed Post — Deadlines, Packing, and Cost Guide 2026
Sweets, dry fruits, clothes or pooja items for the family back home — here is when to book so it arrives before Dussehra, what the counter will and won't accept, how to pack food so it survives the trip, and what it will cost under the new August 2026 parcel rates.

Yes, you can send Navratri and Dussehra gifts by Speed Post — dry sweets, namkeen, dry fruits, clothes and most pooja items are fine, as long as nothing can leak, spoil or smell. Navratri starts on Sunday, 11 October 2026 and Dussehra is on Tuesday, 20 October, which is a central government holiday, so post offices are shut.
The short version on timing: if your family is in another state, book by Monday, 12 October for the box to arrive before Dussehra. Same city, you have until about Thursday, 15 October. A 2 kg box of sweets sent by Speed Post to another state costs ₹319 plus GST at the new retail rates.
Honestly, the biggest risk this season isn't the post office losing your parcel. It's booking two days too late, or packing motichoor laddus in a thin box. Both are easy to avoid. Here's how.
Last Safe Booking Dates for Navratri and Dussehra 2026
India Post publishes delivery norms for Speed Post parcels: Local 1–2 days, Metro to Metro 1–3 days, State Capital to State Capital 1–4 days, Same State 1–4 days, and Rest of the Country 4–5 days. India Post says delivery through a branch post office (the small offices that serve many villages) takes one additional day. We've worked backwards from those norms, skipping Sundays and the 20 October holiday, to give you a booking date with a little buffer.
| Where the gift is going | India Post norm | For the start of Navratri (11 Oct) | Before Dussehra (20 Oct) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Same city (Local) | 1–2 days | Book by Thu 8 Oct | Book by Thu 15 Oct |
| Metro to metro (e.g. Mumbai → Delhi) | 1–3 days | Book today (Wed 7 Oct) | Book by Wed 14 Oct |
| Same state / state capital to state capital | 1–4 days | Book today — may land 12 Oct | Book by Tue 13 Oct |
| Another state, small town or village | 4–5 days (+1 for branch office) | Too late for day one — aim for Dussehra | Book by Mon 12 Oct |
Navratri lasts nine days. If you missed the first day, don't worry — a box that lands on day three or four is still very much on time. What most families want is the sweets in hand before Ashtami and Dussehra, so the right-hand column is the one that matters.
Book in the morning. Post offices usually send out mail at set times of the day, so a parcel booked late in the day may only leave the next day — quietly eating one of your buffer days. If you're cutting it close, go early and ask the clerk when today's dispatch closes.
October Holidays That Cut Your Working Days
Parcels barely move on days when post offices are closed, so count working days, not calendar days. Between today and Dussehra, these are the days to watch:
Sundays — 11 and 18 October
Most post offices don't book or deliver regular Speed Post on Sundays (a few cities have round-the-clock booking counters). Navratri's first day falls on a Sunday this year, so a parcel can't be delivered on day one anyway unless it arrived by Saturday.
Monday 19 October — may be closed in some states
Under the central government's 2026 holiday list, a coordination committee in each state picks three extra holidays from an optional list that includes "an additional day for Dussehra". Durga Puja's Saptami (18 October) and Mahashtami (19 October) are also on the restricted holiday list. In Durga Puja states such as West Bengal, offices may be shut on one or more of these days — ask your local post office. This is why we suggest a parcel arrive by Saturday 17 October.
Tuesday 20 October — Dussehra (central government holiday)
Dussehra (Vijay Dashmi) is one of the compulsory holidays on the central government's 2026 list, so post offices are closed. Anything still in transit simply waits for Wednesday.
Saturday hours vary by office — some work a full day, some a half day. Check the timings board at your post office before you plan a Saturday booking. For the full month, see our list of post office holidays in October 2026. And if you're already thinking about Diwali: it falls on Sunday, 8 November this year, so the same plan-ahead logic applies.
What You Can and Can't Send: Sweets, Dry Fruits, Clothes, Pooja Items
India Post's prohibited list doesn't name sweets or clothes at all. What it bans is anything dangerous or flammable, cash, and any item that "by their nature or their packing" could soil or damage other mail. In practice that means the counter clerk is asking one question: could this leak, spoil or stink inside a mail bag? If the answer is yes, it gets refused.
Usually accepted
- Dry, firm sweets — besan laddu, kaju katli, chikki, shakarpara
- Namkeen and faral — chakli, chivda, sev, mathri, bhakarwadi
- Dry fruits, makhana, mishri, dry prasad
- Sealed, shop-packed sweets with a long shelf life
- Clothes, sarees, chunri, dandiya sticks
- Pooja items — idols, photo frames, kumkum and roli in sealed packs, agarbatti
Leave these out
- Syrupy or milk sweets — rasgulla, gulab jamun, kalakand, fresh peda, rasmalai
- Anything cooked and fresh — halwa, kheer, puri, cut fruit
- Loose ghee, oil, honey or pickles in weak jars
- Firecrackers, matchboxes, camphor or anything flammable
- Cash or shagun envelopes with notes inside
- Live plants or anything with soil
Don't tuck cash inside the box. Coins and banknotes are on India Post's prohibited list unless sent through its special insured process. Send the shagun by UPI instead and put a card in the box.
Silver coins or jewellery as a Dhanteras-style gift? India Post's prohibited list covers "coins, banknotes and other valuable items, except permitted through a special process". Don't slip them into a sweets box — tell the clerk what's inside before you pack, and ask whether it can be booked and how to insure it (more on insurance in the cost section).
How to Pack Sweets and Food So They Arrive Whole
Your box will be stacked, thrown into bags and moved between vans and sorting hubs. Pack it as if it will be dropped from waist height — because it might be.
Cool and dry everything first
Homemade laddus and chivda should be fully cooled and dry before they go into a container. Warm food sweats inside a sealed box and turns soggy or mouldy in transit.
Use airtight plastic or steel containers — not glass
Put each sweet in its own airtight container, then seal the lid with tape or cling film. Thin sweet-shop cardboard boxes crush easily, so put them inside a sturdier container or a tin. Skip glass jars wherever you can.
Double-bag for leak-proofing
Slip each container into a zip-lock or sealed plastic bag. Ghee-based sweets can sweat oil in warm weather, and the extra bag stops a grease stain from soaking through the carton — a stained box is exactly what makes clerks nervous.
Use a strong corrugated carton and fill the gaps
Pick a box that's just big enough, then pack the empty space with crumpled newspaper or bubble wrap so nothing rattles when you shake it. Clothes make great padding — wrap the sweet tins in the saree or kurta you're sending anyway.
Carry it open, seal it at the counter
Counter staff may want to look inside or give a food parcel a gentle shake before accepting it. Take the carton half-closed with a roll of brown tape in your bag, show the contents if asked, then seal every seam with tape in an H pattern. Around Diwali, some big post offices have run special counters that inspect and pack gift parcels for you — Pune GPO, for example, has done this for sweets and gifts sent abroad. Ask at your head post office whether there's one this year.
Write both addresses with phone numbers
Write the address on the box itself, not just on a loose slip. Include the 6-digit PIN code and the receiver's mobile number so the postman can call before coming. Our guide on how to write the address on Speed Post has ready examples.
Motichoor and boondi laddus crumble. If you're sending them, pack them snugly in a single layer in a rigid tin with no space to roll. Besan laddu and kaju katli travel much better.
Speed Post Parcel Charges by Weight and Distance (from 1 August 2026)
Since August 2026, India Post has a clear split: documents (letters, ID cards, bank kits, and non-commercial packets up to 500 g such as Rakhis and greeting cards) pay the document rate, and everything else is a parcel. A typical box of sweets or clothes is a parcel. These are the official retail Speed Post Parcel rates, effective 1 August 2026:
All amounts in Indian Rupees (₹). GST is added on top at the counter.
| Weight | Local | Within State | Zone / Metro | Other States |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 500 g | ₹28 | ₹76 | ₹82 | ₹90 |
| 501 g – 1 kg | ₹48 | ₹101 | ₹137 | ₹143 |
| 1.001 – 1.5 kg | ₹60 | ₹130 | ₹182 | ₹228 |
| 1.501 – 2 kg | ₹87 | ₹178 | ₹254 | ₹319 |
| 2.001 – 3 kg | ₹116 | ₹243 | ₹355 | ₹450 |
| 3.001 – 4 kg | ₹145 | ₹298 | ₹441 | ₹560 |
| 4.001 – 5 kg | ₹174 | ₹361 | ₹539 | ₹686 |
| Each additional kg | +₹35 | +₹60 | +₹95 | +₹120 |
You don't need to work out the zone yourself — the counter will apply it based on where the parcel is going. The maximum is 35 kg per parcel. Weigh the packed box at home on a kitchen or luggage scale so the bill doesn't surprise you.
Example 1 — Sweets box from Pune to parents in Lucknow
- Packed weight: 1.8 kg → 1.501–2 kg slab
- Zone: Other States
- Speed Post charge: ₹319 + GST
Example 2 — Clothes and dry fruits from Bengaluru to Mysuru
- Packed weight: 3.5 kg → 3.001–4 kg slab
- Zone: Within State
- Speed Post charge: ₹298 + GST
| Extra | What India Post says |
|---|---|
| Proof of Delivery | ₹10 per article |
| Insurance | Available up to ₹1 lakh — ask the counter what it costs for your declared value |
| Compensation if lost or damaged (uninsured) | Double the Speed Post charges or ₹1,000, whichever is less |
| Compensation for delay | Refund of the Speed Post charges |
Sending something expensive? Without insurance, the most you'd get back for a lost parcel is ₹1,000. If the box holds a silk saree or a silver item worth far more, the insurance fee is worth paying.
Heavier Gifts? India Post Parcel Is the Cheaper Option
If you're sending a big carton — a full set of clothes for the family, a few kilos of dry fruits — and you have time, look at India Post Parcel. It uses the same zones and costs less for anything going outside your city (local rates are the same as Speed Post Parcel). It is ordinarily sent by surface only, whereas Speed Post Parcel is sent by air, or by surface where that's faster. India Post doesn't publish a delivery norm for it on the parcel page, so treat it as the slower choice and only use it if you're booking well ahead.
| Packed weight, Other States | Speed Post Parcel | India Post Parcel | You save |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 2 kg | ₹319 | ₹239 | ₹80 |
| Up to 5 kg | ₹686 | ₹515 | ₹171 |
| Each additional kg | +₹120 | +₹90 | ₹30/kg |
Both rates exclude GST and are retail rates effective 1 August 2026.
Choose Speed Post Parcel when…
There's food in the box, or the Dussehra deadline is close. Faster transit matters a lot more for laddus than for a shawl.
Choose India Post Parcel when…
It's clothes, utensils or decorations, the carton is heavy, and you're booking early — for example, sending Diwali gifts now for 8 November.
Split into two boxes when…
You have sweets and heavy items. Send the sweets fast by Speed Post and the heavy, non-perishable things by India Post Parcel.

Can't get to the counter? India Post's Dak Sewa app lets you calculate postage, book Speed Post and parcels, and request a pickup. Tracking Your Gift Parcel Until It Reaches Home
Your receipt carries the consignment number. Send a photo of it to whoever is receiving the box, so they know it's coming and can pick up the phone when the postman calls. Then check progress on SpeedIndiaPost.com — you'll see the booking scan, then the bagging and dispatch scans, and finally the out-for-delivery and delivered entries.
Don't panic if nothing changes over Sunday or Dussehra — scans resume on the next working day. Our guide to what each tracking status means explains every step. If the parcel is clearly stuck well past the delivery norm, file a Speed Post complaint with the consignment number.
