Voter ID (EPIC) Speed Post Tracking — How to Track Your Voter ID Card Delivery

Your new or updated voter ID card (EPIC) is posted to your home through India Post. The fastest way to track it is the SMS the Election Commission sends to your registered mobile at each stage. If you get a 13-character Speed Post number, paste it into our tracker. If you don't, here is exactly who to ask and what to do meanwhile.

Here's the short answer. Once your Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) approves your Form 6 (new voter) or Form 8 (shifting, correction or replacement), an EPIC is generated, printed and handed to the Department of Posts for delivery to the address on the electoral roll. The Election Commission of India (ECI) says you should get SMS updates at each stage, from EPIC generation till delivery.

Since June 2025 there's a formal target too: the ECI's new SOP aims to deliver the EPIC within 15 days of the update in the electoral roll. Before that, officials said it took a little over a month.

What most guides skip is the practical part: where the tracking number actually shows up, what to do when nobody gives you one, and how to get a usable voter ID today while the card is still on its way. That's what this guide covers.

The ECI's 15-Day Delivery Rule — How It Works

On 18 June 2025, the ECI issued a press note titled "ECI to fast-track EPIC delivery". It introduced a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) with three parts that matter to you:

15 days from roll update

The clock starts when the electoral roll is updated — a new enrolment or a change in any detail of an existing voter. Not from the day you submitted the form.

SMS at each stage

Real-time tracking runs from EPIC generation by the ERO till delivery by the Department of Posts, with SMS notifications to the elector along the way.

ECINet + India Post link

A dedicated IT module on the ECI's ECINet platform handles it, and the Department of Posts' API is integrated with ECINet.

Read the 15 days correctly. It doesn't cover the time your form spends with the Booth Level Officer (BLO) for field verification and with the ERO for a decision. If your application is still "under process", the 15-day clock hasn't started yet.

Where to Find Your Voter ID Tracking Number

Honestly, this is where people get stuck. There isn't always one obvious place that shows a Speed Post number for your voter card. Check these places, in this order:

1

The SMS on your registered mobile

Search your messages for "EPIC". Under the June 2025 SOP, the ECI says electors get an SMS at each stage, from EPIC generation till delivery. If your message contains a 13-character number (two letters, nine digits, ending in "IN"), that's your consignment number.

2

Your application status on the Voters' Service Portal

Go to voters.eci.gov.in, use the option to track your application status and enter the reference number from your Form 6 or Form 8 acknowledgement. This tells you whether your form has been approved and your EPIC generated. If it hasn't, nothing has been posted yet.

3

Your state CEO website

Each state's Chief Electoral Officer runs its own website, and some publish EPIC dispatch details. It's worth a look, but don't count on it — what's shown differs from state to state.

4

Ask your BLO or the ERO office

If you got no SMS and the portal shows no dispatch details, contact your Booth Level Officer. The ECI's ECINet platform and app have a "Book-a-Call with BLO" facility, or call the Voter Helpline 1950 (the national toll-free line is 1800-11-1950, 8 AM to 8 PM daily). Give your EPIC number or form reference number and ask plainly: "Has my card been dispatched, and what is the Speed Post number?"

No SMS at all? A likely reason is that the mobile number on your electoral roll entry is missing, old or wrong. Fix it (see the e-EPIC section below) — you'll need it for the e-EPIC OTP anyway.

Step-by-Step: Track Your Voter ID on India Post

Once you have the consignment number, tracking works like any other Speed Post article:

  1. 1 Copy the 13-character number exactly, for example EK123456789IN. No spaces. Mixing up the letter O and the digit 0 is a common mistake.
  2. 2 Paste it into the tracker on SpeedIndiaPost.com, or use India Post's website (indiapost.gov.in) or India Post's DakSewa app.
  3. 3 Read the latest scan. The location tells you which post office has your card now.
  4. 4 If you just got the number and see "details not found", give it some time. A new booking can take a while to show up online.
Status you see What it means for your voter ID What you should do
Item Booked The election office has handed your card to India Post. Nothing yet. Check again in a day or two.
Bagged / Dispatched / In Transit Moving between sorting offices. Wait. If it stays here several days, see our stuck-tracking guide.
Item Received at delivery office It has reached the post office that serves your PIN code. Keep someone at home and your phone on.
Out for Delivery The postman has it today. Be reachable. Answer unknown local numbers.
Delivery Attempted / Addressee Absent Nobody could receive it. Go to the delivery post office quickly with photo ID.
Delivered India Post's record says it was handed over. Not with you? Ask family and neighbours first, then complain.
Return to Sender It's going back to the sender — the election office. Contact your ERO office and ask how to collect it or get it re-sent.

How Long Does It Take? Application to Delivery

Think of it in two halves. The first half (verification and approval) has no single all-India number you can count on. The second half (EPIC generation to your door) is what the 15-day SOP targets.

Stage Who handles it How long
Form 6 / Form 8 submitted You Day 0 — keep the reference number
Field verification BLO Varies by area
Approval and roll update ERO Varies — check your application status on the portal
EPIC generated, printed, handed to India Post, delivered ERO + Department of Posts Target: within 15 days of roll update

Practical rule: if your status shows the EPIC was generated more than 15 days ago and you have neither the card nor a tracking SMS, it's time to follow up. Don't sit and wait for another month.

Need It Now? Download Your e-EPIC While You Wait

You don't have to wait for the postman to have a voter ID. The e-EPIC is a secure PDF version of your EPIC (about 250 KB) that you can keep on your phone, upload to DigiLocker or print and laminate yourself. The ECI's e-EPIC FAQ says you can print it and show it as proof of identity at the polling station.

How to download e-EPIC

  1. 1 Register or log in at voters.eci.gov.in, or use the ECI's official app.
  2. 2 Choose Download e-EPIC.
  3. 3 Enter your EPIC number. New voter without one yet? Your Form 6 reference number works too.
  4. 4 Verify with the OTP sent to the mobile number registered on the electoral roll, then download the PDF.

OTP not coming? Your mobile isn't registered on the roll, or it's an old number. Choose the e-KYC option: a live face check using your phone, tablet or computer camera, after which you can update your mobile number and download. If e-KYC fails, the FAQ says to visit the ERO office with photo ID to update your number.

Voter ID Not Received? What to Do, in Order

Work out which situation you're in, then follow that path. Don't file a fresh application yet — a duplicate form can complicate your record.

Status still "under process" or not approved

Nothing has been posted. The hold-up is at verification. Make sure you didn't miss the BLO's visit or call, then contact the BLO (use "Book-a-Call with BLO" or call 1950) and ask what is pending.

EPIC generated, but no SMS or tracking number after 15 days

Call your ERO office (the election office for your Assembly constituency) or the 1950 helpline. Ask for the dispatch date and Speed Post number. Download the e-EPIC in the meantime.

Tracking says "Delivery Attempted"

Visit the delivery post office shown in tracking with your photo ID and the consignment number. Go soon, because undelivered items are held only for a limited time before being sent back. Our delivery attempted guide walks you through it.

Tracking says "Delivered" but you don't have it

Check with family, your building's security and neighbours. Then raise a complaint with India Post using the consignment number — see delivered but not received and how to file a Speed Post complaint. Tell your ERO office too.

Returned to sender, or lost for good

Ask the ERO office whether the returned card can be collected. If it's truly lost, Form 8 includes an option for a replacement EPIC. Ask the ERO office what you need to attach for a lost card.

Changed Your Address but the Card Went to the Old One?

The card is posted to the address on the electoral roll at the time of dispatch. If you moved, here's what usually happened and what to do:

  • Your shifting request wasn't approved yet. If an old-address card was dispatched first, ask the current residents or the old landlord to keep it for you. Then check that your Form 8 for "shifting of residence" is filed and approved.
  • You never filed Form 8. Your roll entry still has the old address, so the card will keep going there. File Form 8 with the ERO of the constituency where you now live, with a self-attested address proof. Once approved, a replacement EPIC is issued for the new address, and you're expected to hand the old card back to the ERO.
  • It's sitting at the old area's post office. Track it. If it shows "Delivery Attempted" there, ask that post office what it needs to hand the item over — expect to show photo ID. If that's not practical, let it return to the ERO and ask them to re-send it.

Tip: Once your shifting is approved, try downloading the e-EPIC again and check whether it shows your new details. If it does, you have a usable ID while the new card is on its way.

Writing addresses clearly helps every delivery — see how to write an address on Speed Post. Waiting for other ID cards too? Our Aadhaar card Speed Post tracking guide works the same way.
