If you sell on Meesho, Instagram or WhatsApp and pay around ₹80 a parcel to ship a small packet to another state, an India Post contract ID can cut that to roughly ₹41. That's the "aadha rate" people are talking about. A short video from a Kisan Mela has been shared widely, where an India Post marketing official explains to a stall owner that a 500 g parcel which costs about ₹84 at the counter costs ₹41 on a business contract.

Those numbers check out. Under the tariff that took effect on 1 August 2026, India Post has two price lists for parcels: retail, for anyone walking up to the counter, and contractual, for registered business customers. For a 500 g India Post Parcel to another state, retail is ₹72 + GST (about ₹85), while the contractual rate works out to about ₹41 including GST.

The catch: you need to send enough to qualify. India Post defines a contractual customer as anyone giving ₹10,000 worth of postage business in a calendar month. Below is everything you need to decide if it's worth it for you, and how to apply.

What Is an India Post Contract ID?

A "contract ID" is the customer ID you get when you sign up as a contractual (bulk) customer with India Post. You sign an agreement with your postal division, and from then on your parcels are billed at the contractual tariff instead of the counter rate. Sellers often call it a business account or bulk customer registration. It's the same thing.

It covers the two parcel services most small sellers use:

India Post Parcel

The economy service. India Post's rules say it's "ordinarily transmitted by surface only", so it's cheaper but slower. Best for non-urgent orders.

Speed Post Parcel

The faster service, sent by air where that's quicker, with insurance available up to ₹5 lakh and cash on delivery for online sellers.

Both take parcels up to 35 kg, and both have a contractual tariff for every weight slab. Book under your contract and you pay the lower rate automatically.

Retail vs Contractual Rates — India Post Parcel (2026)

Both columns include 18% GST so you can compare what you actually pay. Retail = India Post's published retail tariff plus GST. Contractual = the gazetted contractual tariff, GST included. Figures rounded to the nearest rupee.

Weight (up to) Local Within State Zone / Metro Other States
500 g ₹33 ₹31 ₹77 ₹37 ₹83 ₹40 ₹85 ₹41
1 kg ₹57 ₹37 ₹107 ₹52 ₹125 ₹61 ₹135 ₹67
2 kg ₹103 ₹53 ₹189 ₹94 ₹234 ₹118 ₹282 ₹135
3 kg ₹137 ₹67 ₹258 ₹118 ₹327 ₹147 ₹398 ₹171
5 kg ₹205 ₹95 ₹382 ₹166 ₹496 ₹207 ₹608 ₹241

Grey is the counter (retail) price; green is the contract price. The pattern is clear: for Within State, Zone/Metro and Other States, the contract rate is roughly half. For Local parcels at 500 g, the difference is tiny (₹33 vs ₹31), so don't sign up just for local deliveries.

Speed Post Parcel — retail vs contractual (before GST)

These are India Post's official figures from its Speed Post Parcel page. 18% GST is added on top.

Weight (up to) Local Within State Zone / Metro Other States
500 g ₹28 ₹28 ₹76 ₹36 ₹82 ₹40 ₹90 ₹47
1 kg ₹48 ₹31 ₹101 ₹49 ₹137 ₹65 ₹143 ₹71
2 kg ₹87 ₹45 ₹178 ₹89 ₹254 ₹140 ₹319 ₹190
5 kg ₹174 ₹81 ₹361 ₹156 ₹539 ₹275 ₹686 ₹350

Where these numbers come from: the Post Office (Sixth Amendment) Regulations, 2026, notified as S.O. 4241(E) in the Gazette of India on 31 July 2026 and effective 1 August 2026, and India Post's tariff pages on indiapost.gov.in. Heavier slabs go up to 35 kg. For regular document Speed Post rates, see our Speed Post charges guide.

How Much Would You Actually Save?

Take a seller sending 500 g India Post Parcels to other states: ₹85 retail vs ₹41 contractual, both with GST. That's ₹44 saved per parcel.

Parcels a month Retail cost Contract cost You save
100 parcels (500 g, other states) ₹8,500 ₹4,100 ₹4,400 / month
300 parcels (500 g, other states) ₹25,500 ₹12,300 ₹13,200 / month
500 parcels (1 kg, within state) ₹53,500 ₹26,000 ₹27,500 / month

Check the minimum first. 100 parcels at ₹41 comes to about ₹4,100 a month — below the ₹10,000 monthly business India Post uses to define a contractual customer. At ₹41 a parcel you'd need roughly 250 parcels a month to cross it. Smaller sellers should ask their Head Post Office whether they can still register; local practice can differ.

Who Should Get a Contract ID

Online sellers: Meesho, Instagram, WhatsApp and website sellers who ship most orders outside their city.

Farmers and FPOs: Seeds, dry produce, spices, honey and other non-perishable goods sent to buyers in other states.

D2C brands: Small brands shipping steady volumes who want predictable, lower per-parcel costs.

Home businesses: Pickles, papad, handicrafts, sarees and books — once monthly volume reaches the ₹10,000 mark.

It's not worth it if you send a few parcels a month, mostly within your own town, or mainly ship perishables that can't sit in surface transit for several days.

Documents Required (Checklist)

India Post doesn't publish one national checklist online, and each postal division uses its own application form. Carry these and you'll be covered in most places:

Aadhaar card of the owner or authorised person
PAN card (personal PAN, or business PAN for a firm or company)
GST registration certificate, if your business is registered under GST
Business registration or address proof (shop licence, Udyam certificate, rent agreement or electricity bill)
Bank details — a cancelled cheque or passbook copy
A working mobile number and email for your account and bills

You'll also sign an agreement with the Department of Posts. If you want credit (Book Now Pay Later), expect to give a security deposit or bank guarantee too.

Post Office Contract ID Kaise Banaye — Step by Step

1

Work out your monthly volume

Count your average parcels a month and multiply by the contract rate for your usual weight and zone. If it reaches ₹10,000 a month, you qualify as a contractual customer by India Post's definition.

2

Go to your Head Post Office

Ask for contractual (bulk) customer registration for India Post Parcel or Speed Post Parcel. Or ask to be connected with the Business Development or Marketing executive of your postal division — they handle new business accounts.

3

Fill in the application and submit documents

Take the checklist above. Mention which services you need: India Post Parcel, Speed Post Parcel, cash on delivery, pickup.

4

Choose how you'll pay

Advance deposit (recharge a balance and bookings are deducted from it) or credit through Book Now Pay Later. See the next section.

5

Sign the agreement and get your customer ID

Once approved, you get a customer/contract ID. Quote it every time you book so the contract rate is charged.

6

Start booking

Hand parcels in at the booking office or Business Post Centre, or ask for pickup if your volume makes you eligible. Keep every booking receipt or manifest.

Need help? Call India Post's toll-free number 1800 266 6868 (agents 8 AM–8 PM, IVR 24×7). Don't rely on personal phone numbers of officials shared in videos — go through your Head Post Office or the official helpline.

Advance Deposit (Wallet) vs Book Now Pay Later

Advance deposit ("wallet recharge")

You pay a sum upfront and each booking is deducted from it. No bank guarantee needed, and India Post gives a higher volume discount on this option (see below). Best for most small sellers.

Book Now Pay Later (BNPL)

You book now and get a bill later. India Post says eligible contractual customers can get this credit after signing an agreement. A security deposit or bank guarantee is usually required.

Extra Benefits for Contract Customers

Volume discounts on top of the contract rate

Applies to contractual customers of India Post Parcel and Speed Post Parcel from 1 August 2026, per India Post.

Free pickup: India Post says eligible corporate and bulk customers can get free collection from their premises, on call or on a regular schedule.

Cash on delivery: available on Speed Post Parcel for e-commerce and online sellers, and as a paid add-on on India Post Parcel.

Rural reach: India Post delivers to every PIN code, including villages that many private couriers don't serve or charge extra for.

India Post Parcel Last Mile: a new service, only for bulk and contractual customers, for parcels delivered within the same office's area — ₹15 to ₹35 + GST up to 5 kg.

Tracking: every parcel gets a consignment number. You and your buyer can track it on SpeedIndiaPost.com. Selling abroad? Ask about India Post's Dak Ghar Niryat Kendras for export parcels.

India Post's published delivery standard for Speed Post parcels is 1–2 days locally, 1–3 days metro to metro and 4–5 days for the rest of the country, with one extra day for villages served by branch offices. Many sellers use India Post for small-town and rural orders where it's cheapest and most reliable, and keep a courier for urgent metro deliveries. Check our Speed Post delivery time guide for route-wise timelines.

Common Mistakes and What to Confirm

Forgetting GST: India Post's published tariffs are before GST; 18% is added. Compare like with like when you weigh up a courier quote.

Ignoring the minimum: Ask what monthly business your division expects, and what happens in a slow month.

Guessing the weight: Rates jump by slab, and parcels are charged on actual or volumetric weight. Pack tight and weigh before you price your product.

Choosing the wrong service: India Post Parcel is cheapest but slower. Use Speed Post Parcel when the buyer expects quick delivery.

Poor packing and addresses: Parcels not packed to India Post's standards can be refused at booking. Write full addresses with PIN and mobile number — see our address guide.
