How to Track Speed Post by SMS, Phone Call or the Dak Sewa App

Weak signal, a website that keeps showing errors, or a parent who'd rather call than click? Here are the ways to check on a Speed Post without a browser, which ones India Post officially lists today, and which old tips you'll see online that we couldn't confirm.

Short answer: the method that works on any phone, with no internet at all, is a call to India Post's customer care number, 1800 266 6868. India Post's contact page lists it as toll-free, with agents available from 8 AM to 8 PM and an automated (IVRS) line running round the clock. Keep your 13-character consignment number ready, like EE123456789IN.

You'll also find an SMS method all over the internet: type POST TRACK followed by the consignment number and send it to 166 or 51969. We have to be straight with you here. India Post's current website and contact page don't mention this SMS service anywhere, so we can't confirm it still replies. It costs you one message to try. Just don't depend on it for anything urgent.

If you have a smartphone with some data, India Post's official app is Dak Sewa. It was revamped in August 2026, and the older Postinfo app is no longer the one to download. It does need a connection, though: none of the official descriptions mention an offline mode.

Which Method Should You Use?

Pick the row that sounds like you. You can always fall back to the next one if the first doesn't work.

Method 1: Track by Phone with the India Post Helpline

This is the one we'd recommend first for anyone without internet, and especially for older family members. It's listed on India Post's official contact page, and you get a human if the recorded menu doesn't help.

1800 266 6868

Toll-free · Agents 8 AM – 8 PM · IVRS 24/7 (except gazetted holidays, India Post says)

1

Write the consignment number down before you dial

It's printed on your booking receipt: two letters, nine digits, then "IN". Reading it out from a crumpled receipt while a recorded voice waits is how mistakes happen. If you're unsure which part is the number, see our consignment number guide.

2

Listen to the menu and choose your language

India Post doesn't publish the IVR menu, and menu options can change, so we won't give you key numbers that might be wrong. Listen for the option about tracking an article or speaking to an agent. Outside 8 AM to 8 PM, only the automated line is available, so call in the daytime if you need a person.

3

Ask the right questions

Don't stop at "where is it?". Ask:

  • What is the latest status, and at which office and date?
  • Which post office will deliver it, and what is that office's phone number?
  • If it's stuck: can you register a complaint now, and what is the complaint number?

Write down the complaint number if you get one. You'll need it to follow up.

The helpline sees the same data as the website. If tracking hasn't updated for days, the agent won't magically see more. Their real value is registering a complaint and getting the delivery office involved. Our guide to tracking that isn't updating explains how long a gap is normal.

Method 2: Track Speed Post by SMS (Read This First)

Almost every tracking guide repeats the same SMS format. Some of our own older guides mention it too. Here it is, exactly as it's usually given:

Type: POST TRACK EE123456789IN

Send to: 166 or 51969

Replace EE123456789IN with your own 13-character number. Put one space after POST and one after TRACK, and keep it in capital letters.

Now the honest part. When we checked in November 2026, India Post's homepage, its contact page and its Speed Post product page listed the website, the Dak Sewa app and the helpline. None of them mentioned SMS tracking, 166 or 51969. The guides that repeat this format don't point to any official page either.

So treat it as something worth one try, not a promise. That's also why we haven't shown you a "sample reply": we couldn't verify what a real reply looks like in 2026, and we'd rather not invent one.

If you get a reply

Expect a short status at best, not the full scan history. Compare it with the status meanings in our tracking status guide, and check the full history when you next have data.

If nothing comes back

Don't keep sending the same message. Check the number once for typos, then call 1800 266 6868 instead. Repeated texts won't make a silent short code answer.

What does the SMS cost? India Post doesn't publish a charge for it, and your operator may not bill it like a normal text. If you're on a prepaid balance, check it after your first try, or ask your mobile operator before sending several.

The SMS Option That Is Official: Delivery Alerts

Here's what India Post does list on its own Speed Post page: SMS-based delivery notifications. Instead of you texting India Post, India Post texts you.

For that to work, the post office needs a mobile number. So if you're the one sending, give your own number and the receiver's number at the counter, and check the receipt to make sure they were typed correctly. If someone is sending you a document, ask them to put your mobile number on the address. It's the closest thing to tracking with no internet, and it costs you nothing extra to ask.

India Post also offers OTP-based secure delivery for Speed Post as a paid add-on. If the item was booked that way, it's handed over only after the receiver gives the OTP to the delivery staff, so the receiver should keep the phone whose number was given at booking handy on delivery day.

Method 3: The Dak Sewa App

Dak Sewa is India Post's official app, developed by the Centre for Excellence in Postal Technology (CEPT). The Communications Minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia, launched a revamped version on 24 August 2026. India Post's homepage carries a QR code to download it, and launch coverage reported nearly 10 lakh downloads since its June 2025 pilot. It's on Google Play and the Apple App Store.

If you still have the old Postinfo app, switch. Postal sources report that it has been discontinued, and India Post's site now points only to Dak Sewa.

How to track in the app

  1. 1Install Dak Sewa from Google Play or the App Store. Check that the developer is shown as the Centre for Excellence in Postal Technology, not some look-alike.
  2. 2Pick your language, then open the tracking option.
  3. 3Type the 13-character number and tap Track. You'll see the scan history, not just the last line.
  4. 4If it's stuck, use the complaint option in the same app and note the complaint number.

Not an offline app. You may read that Dak Sewa "works offline". India Post's own description and the August 2026 launch coverage say nothing of the sort. Tracking pulls live data, so you need at least a weak connection. Install it while you have Wi-Fi so it's ready when you need it.

Method 4: Ask the Post Office Directly

The oldest method still works. Walk into any post office with your receipt and ask the counter to check the number. Better still, contact the delivery post office, the one that serves the receiver's PIN code. They're the people who actually hold the item once it arrives.

Say you posted an admit card from Patna to your cousin in a village near Nashik and she has no data. She can phone or visit her local post office, give the number, and ask whether it has arrived. If it has, she can ask whether she can collect it from the counter instead of waiting for the next delivery round.

Go during working hours. Our guide to post office timings has the usual counter hours.

Watch Out for Fake "India Post" SMS

When you're waiting for a parcel, a text saying "your package is held, update your address" feels believable. India Post's homepage itself warns about fake links pretending to be India Post, and tells people not to share OTPs or banking details through unofficial links.

Don't tap links in tracking texts

India Post's official website is indiapost.gov.in. If a message sends you to any other address asking for a payment or card details, it's a scam.

A delivery OTP is for the postman only

Share a delivery OTP only with the postman handing you the item. Nobody needs it over the phone to "release" your parcel.
