Passport Speed Post Tracking — How to Track Your Indian Passport Delivery Step by Step
Your appointment is done, police verification is clear, and the Passport Seva portal shows "Passport Dispatched". Now begins the anxious wait. Here is how to find your Speed Post consignment number, track your passport in real time, and handle every situation from missed delivery to a returned booklet.
Already have your consignment number?
Track your passport delivery live — free real-time tracking, no login required.
Every Indian passport printed at a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Regional Passport Office (RPO) is dispatched to the applicant's residential address via India Post Speed Post. Whether it is a fresh passport, renewal, tatkal reissue, or child passport, the delivery route is the same — through India Post's Speed Post network.
Once printed, the passport booklet is handed over to India Post along with a Speed Post consignment number — a 13-character code that lets you track the parcel in real time from dispatch to delivery. The Passport Seva portal publishes this number on your status page.
This guide walks through where to find the tracking number, how to interpret each status, expected timelines for Normal and Tatkal passports, and exactly what to do if the postman shows "Delivery Attempted" without any of you being home.
Step 1 — Find Your Passport Speed Post Consignment Number
The tracking number is not sent in a standalone SMS on Day 1. You will find it in two places:
Method 1 — Passport Seva Portal (Most reliable)
- 1 Open portal2.passportindia.gov.in → "Track Application Status"
- 2 Enter your 15-digit File Number (from the appointment receipt) and date of birth
- 3 Once status shows "Passport dispatched via speed post on DD-MM-YYYY, envelope number: EE123456789IN", copy the 13-character number in the envelope field
Method 2 — SMS from Passport Seva
The Passport Seva sends an SMS to your registered mobile when dispatch happens. It looks like this:
Search your SMS inbox for "passport" or "consignment" to find it quickly.
Method 3 — Email from Passport Seva
An email with the same information is sent to the email address registered in your passport application. Search your inbox (including Spam/Promotions folders) for "Passport Seva dispatch" — the consignment number is in the body.
No consignment number yet? It only appears after status changes to "Passport Dispatched". If your status still shows "Printing in Progress", "Passport Printed", or "Under Review" — the tracking number has not been generated. Check again in 24–48 hours. Also, the consignment number format is always 13 characters — 2 letters + 8 digits + IN. Learn how the prefix is structured in our consignment number format guide.
Step 2 — Track Your Passport Delivery in Real Time
Once you have the 13-character consignment number, tracking takes 5 seconds. Three tools give you the same underlying India Post data:
SpeedIndiaPost.com (Recommended)
Real-time tracking with full event history, interactive map view, no login required. Fastest for repeated checks.
Track Now →India Post Website
Official at indiapost.gov.in. Frequently slow to load and often throws captcha errors during peak hours.
India Post Mobile App
"Post Info" app on Android and iOS. Basic tracking, no interactive features.

How Long Does Passport Delivery Take After Dispatch?
Once your passport is handed to India Post, delivery follows standard Speed Post delivery norms. The Passport Seva side of processing (police verification, printing, quality check) takes weeks — but the actual India Post delivery is fast.
| Passport Type | PSK Processing | Speed Post Delivery | Total (After Appointment) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal (Fresh / Renewal) | 15–30 working days* | 1–4 working days | 3–6 weeks typically |
| Tatkal (Fresh / Renewal) | 3–7 working days* | 1–4 working days | 1–2 weeks typically |
| Post-dispatch delivery only | — | 1–4 working days | Same as delivery column |
*PSK processing time depends heavily on police verification outcome. If police verification is delayed or requires re-visit, the total can extend significantly.
The 1–4 day delivery follows standard India Post Speed Post delivery norms — 1 day local, 2 days state capital, 3 days most inter-state, 4 days for remote areas. See our Speed Post delivery time guide for detailed city-to-city timings.
Reading Passport Tracking — What Each Status Means
When you track your passport consignment on SpeedIndiaPost.com, you will see a sequence of status updates. Here is what each one means for your passport specifically:
Item Booked
The Passport Seva Kendra or Regional Passport Office handed your passport to India Post. Booking scan usually happens at a PSK-linked post office near the RPO.
Item Bagged
Your passport is sorted and packed into a mail bag destined for your city's sorting hub.
Dispatched / In Transit
The bag is moving between sorting hubs by air or road. This status can persist 1–3 days for long-distance shipments — normal, not a cause for concern.
Reached Destination
Your passport is now at the delivery post office serving your PIN code. Delivery typically happens within 1–2 working days after this scan.
Out for Delivery
The postman is on the way to your address today. Stay reachable — passports require the addressee to be present with photo ID for handover.
Delivery Attempted / Item Not Delivered
Postman came but could not deliver. The passport returns to the post office. See the missed delivery section below — act within 7 days or the passport goes back to the RPO.
Delivered
Your passport was handed over. Immediately verify: check the passport is intact, the details are correct, and confirm who received it.

Passport Delivery Rules — Strictly Addressee-Only
Passports are stricter than PAN cards — addressee-only delivery is enforced.
India Post postmen are instructed to hand a passport only to the applicant in person, after verifying photo ID. A family member, spouse, or neighbour cannot legally sign for it on your behalf under normal delivery. The postman will not risk a delivery-related complaint given that passports are official identity documents.
This is why passports are frequently marked "Delivery Attempted" even when someone was home — the postman came, the addressee (applicant named on the passport) was not physically present, and no one else could receive it.
Keep these ready on the day tracking shows "Out for Delivery":
Minor's passport: A minor's passport is delivered to the parent/guardian who signed the application. Bring your own ID (matching the ID given in the application) and the child's birth certificate as backup.
"Delivery Attempted" But You Were Not Home — Exact Steps
This is the single most common issue with passport delivery. Act within the 7-day holding window — after that, the passport is returned to the Regional Passport Office and re-dispatch requires a fresh request.
Look for the intimation slip
Check your letterbox, under your door, or with apartment security. The intimation slip has the delivery post office name and address — that is where your passport is being held.
Confirm the post office via tracking
On SpeedIndiaPost.com, the location on the last scan shows which post office has your passport. Note the exact name and area.
Visit the delivery post office in person
This is the fastest resolution. Bring your original photo ID (matching the passport application), the intimation slip if you have it, and the Speed Post consignment number. Ask for the Speed Post counter or postmaster.
Or call and request re-delivery
Find the post office number via indiapost.gov.in's Post Office Locator (enter your PIN code). Call and request re-delivery the next working day. Confirm you will be home in person with ID.
Escalate to the helpline if unresponsive
India Post national helpline: 1800 266 6868. Provide consignment number and situation. For passport-specific issues, contact the Passport Seva helpline: 1800 258 1800 or write to the Regional Passport Office directly.

If Your Passport Was Returned to the RPO
If tracking shows "Item Returned to Sender" or "Returned undelivered", the passport went back to the Regional Passport Office that issued it. You do not lose your passport — but you need to act to get it re-dispatched.
Contact your RPO immediately
Find the RPO from passportindia.gov.in → Contact Us → Regional Passport Offices. Email or call with your file number to request re-dispatch or in-person collection.
Collect from RPO in person
Most RPOs allow in-person collection on producing photo ID and the appointment receipt. Confirm the RPO's collection timings before visiting.
Request re-dispatch
Alternatively, apply for re-dispatch via the Passport Seva grievance module (mPassport Seva app or portal). You may need to pay a small re-dispatch fee if the failure was due to your unavailability.
Do not delay. Passports returned to RPO are held for a limited time (typically 30 days). If unclaimed, the RPO may cancel/destroy the booklet, requiring you to file a fresh application from scratch.
